Because orb webs are so ubiquitous, it is easy to overlook how astounding they are. The basic scaffolding of an orb web is laid when the spider climbs a vertical surface, such as a tree, and drops a line of silk. This line is incredibly fine, yet is one of the strongest fibres on Earth. The silken thread floats on the wind until it catches on a second nearby vertical surface, such as a branch, to create a tightrope-like horizontal bridge line. The spider then drops another line from the midpoint of the bridge. From this basic frame, the spider strings a non-sticky border and, through a complex series of manoeuvres, creates radius lines—radii—that join the central line to the periphery of the web structure. The spider then weaves its "capture spiral"—a continuous double thread of a specific type of sticky silk that spirals from the outside of the web toward the central hub. At each junction with a radius line, the capture thread is reinforced with a special glue excreted by the spider. The central hub is a non-sticky region where the spider lurks in wait for its prey.

The spider appeared almost "broken" and only faintly visible; certainly not as striking as the bee. As mentioned in another review, the spider does darken significantly when the coin is turned on its side. I bought this coin because I try to keep sets together, hoping for the best. This coin would definitely be a miss on its own merit.

Nice coin that displays well but expensive for what it is.

I love the Animal Architect series for the beauty and detail of each coin, and for the detailed information that comes with each. I think this would make a great gift for a child interested in spiders. This coin has a beautiful mirrored surface and the details on the spider are superior to anything I have from other mints, especially considering the size of the coin. For those who are concerned about the size vs the cost, I only say this: The reason the RCM charges a premium (I am guessing), is that it probably costs a lot to add color with precision to these coins.

The theme of bugs is good but... I think this is way too expensif. Face value should be at least 5$ for 1/4 oz. I believe that face value should be more standard, for exemple (1/4 oz 5$, 1/2 oz 10$, 3/4 oz 15$ and 1oz 20$ etc). With this said, 69.95$ for a color coin big like a 25 cent when we can buy a butterflies at 1oz for 99.95$. This makes a difference of 30$ for 3/4 oz more. Remember that the O Canada serie is half oz for 10$ face value with no color for 40$ execpt that maple coin. The rest is just a matter of mintage. It would be easier to purchase this way i think because people would be more aware of what they are bying so people wouldn't complaint about how big it is when they receive the coin.
