Long before her name became synonymous with chocolate, Laura Secord (1775-1868) played a critical part in our nation's success during the War of 1812. Upon hearing American officers discussing their intention to ambush a British outpost and capture its commanding officer, Secord made a 30-kilometre trek by foot to successfully alert 400 First Nations warriors and Lieutenant James FitzGibbon. Upon reaching Beaver Dams, American forces were ambushed themselves by the First Nations warriors and 50 British soldiers, and ultimately forced to surrender.

I appreciate our Mint creating this historically relevant set to commemorate the strength and courage of our founding citizens. Being at the forefront of responsibility in war takes the most courageous and strong people that exist; these people deserve our utmost respect and remembrance. This set was designed wonderfully with our maple leaf, the warrior's name abound, and a version in red seemingly relating to blood shed by many. I wish the product came in air tight packaging instead of bubble like packaging so the coins could be placed into the cardboard set holder while still being protected from oxidation.
