When the war broke out in Korea in 1950, most nations were still struggling to recover from the end of the Second World War. However, Canada was able to mobilize almost 30,000 land, sea and air forces to defend sovereignty of the Republic of Korea. Although Canada represented a small portion of the total international force, its contribution was a larger proportion of its population than that of most other nations. On July 27, 1953, as a result of the allies' involvement in the war, officials signed an armistice agreement that brought the three-year combat in Korea to an end.
This one-dollar silver coin is a near exact reproduction of the original Korea Medal that was awarded to all Commonwealth forces at the end of the war. An ideal tribute to the efforts of Canadian veterans, this coin is sure to be popular: so order yours today!

Design
Your coin features Edward Carter Preston's original design of Hercules, feted warrior of Roman mythology, slaying the indomitable hydra-headed monster. This picture is an allegory for the perilous struggles of war, and a tribute to those who freely go to battle. The original engraving of "KOREA" on the medal has been expanded to include "CORÉE," reflecting Canada's official status as a bilingual nation.
The obverse features the same effigy that appeared on the original medal: Mary Gillick's 1953 portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, which was in use on Canadian coins in this time period.

Thank you for producing this coin. This coin should make us think of all the soldiers who fought in this war and the ones that gave up their lives for the freedom of the people

My first impression via the website was that it looked funny. Upon further research, I could see the historical significance and authenticity of the design being taken from the original medal awarded to those who fought during the Korean War. A few weeks later the actual 60th Anniversary Commemoration was being recognized in both Koreas, in the US, and also here in Canada. So, I just had to order mine. It has historical and personal meaning, and I proudly display it here in our home. Cheers,

Just bought to add to my Silver Dollar collection. The RCM needs to keep the cost down for me to be able to continue collecting. It seems like every year the costs continue to rise and rise.

To be fare, this is not a bad design coin to honour the Canadian military and veterans who have sacrificed their lives in the Korean war regardless of who won or loss. The mint noted that the coin's graphic design is taken from the medal awarded after the war so this coin can be treated as a memorial item. There are other wars that Canadian Forces have contributions to defend the world and I hope the mint can also issue coins to honour them in a series.
