One of North America's most common rabbit species, the brown and grey-coloured eastern cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus) can be found in rural and urban areas within southern Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba. While gardeners and farmers may bemoan the cottontail's appetite for flowers and vegetables, animal lovers of all ages delight in the sight of this mammal with a cotton ball-like tail, as it forages and scampers through green spaces, yards and grassy fields.
Cottontails are solitary animals that are most active from dusk until dawn. Out of necessity, they're fast! Their quick bursts of speed and a zigzag running pattern is one of the species' few defence mechanisms against such predators as hawks, owls, coyotes, weasels and even humans.
Remarkably, young rabbits (known as kits) are born blind and largely hairless, with a birth weight of less than 28 grams each. In preparation for the birth, the female (or doe) creates a shallow nest in the ground and lines it with her fur. In the wild, the doe can deliver up to seven litters per year throughout her three- to five-year lifespan, with each litter averaging five kits. Despite their vulnerability at birth, these young cottontails grow quickly and by the seventh week, they're ready to venture out into the world all on their own.

Designed by Canadian artist Pierre Leduc, the image on your $2 bimetallic coin is of two young eastern cottontail rabbits that are rendered in exquisite detail in a three-quarter portrait. Kept relatively hidden by the tall grass and vegetation that surrounds them, these furry cottontails sit quietly as they take in the scents, sights and sounds of their environment.
Packaging:
Your coins come in a beautiful book-style packaging with removable lens and serialized certificate. It also includes a CD lens concept with maroon outer cover and custom beauty box.

This is a lovely coin set for a person who appreciates zoomorphic themed collectibles, particularly rabbits! I wish they offered the $2 coin in uncirculated rolls as well. The box this comes in is beautifully illustrated, and the maroon presentation case compliments the enclosed set. The finish is a matte/proof combination which shows off the detail of each coin nicely. Fulfillment took a while on this order, maybe due to limited availability, but shipping was fast and the order arrived three days ahead of estimates.

The specimen sets are always beautiful with their matt and shiny finishes. The baby rabbits in the toonie are so finely detailed and sweet.

You can't lose with bunnies, who are super-cute and great companions right up here with cats and dogs. Price is a little steep for a non-precious metal coin... but I couldn't resist these bunnies.

Very happy with the set but very disappointed in how long it took to arrive. Ordered early November (8th) and it JUST arrived in time (Dec. 18th) to reach its destination as a Christmas gift. I can understand that sometimes there are delays but I would have greatly appreciated having an update to inform me of this. There was no word at all until I phoned the Mint in late November. My online account just continued to read that it was "processing." The set still arrived a week past the date I was given on the phone. The only time I received notification of a delay was an email that came in the day AFTER my gift finally arrived. Communication regarding the status of my order was definitely poor. I would recommend this item but with the warning to order VERY much ahead of when you want it. I thought I had done so but was still scrambling at the last minute.

The coin that featured the bunnies ranks among the cutest base-metal coins produced for a mint set. The image is clean, crisp, and not too busy. Great item for a older school child interested in coins. Great starter set for a new hobby. If you collect yearly sets, it's great. --But for a few dollars more, I would recommend one of the limited edition coins over one of the proof sets.
