The raven is central to several First Nation traditions, and this coin celebrates its role in teaching the story of the northern lights. It's the third achromatic hologram coin the Mint has ever issued, and the first to go beyond a circular design! The hologram was produced using a patented nanotechnology-based method of producing three-dimensional non-coloured holographic elements. This advanced technology is also used on banknotes requiring exceptional security and detailed images. The hologram is not affixed to the coin, but struck microscopically into the coin's surface—stunning!

Your coin's stylized design is inspired by First Nations storytelling traditions of the Pacific Northwest! Order yours today!

Special features:
  • Final coin in a story of the northern lights series.
  • This amazing coin is only the third achromatic hologram coin ever to be released by the Royal Canadian Mint.
  • USES NANOTECHNOLOGY! Struck into 99.99% pure silver using nanotechnology, the holographic sky lit by the northern lights makes for a truly unique reverse design.
  • This coin features the Royal Canadian Mint's first non-circular achromatic hologram.
  • Your coin is housed in a colourful specialty beauty box to showcase and protect your investment.
  • Artist Nathalie Bertin's raven image on the reverse of this coin is inspired by First Nations storytelling traditions of the Pacific Northwest.
  • Your coin is GST/HST exempt and has a limited worldwide mintage.

About the Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Nathalie Bertin features a stylized raven in flight above an engraved coniferous mountainside, set against a sky lit by the northern lights. The raven and sky are entirely holographic. The raven flies, wings fully outstretched, in the centre of this image. The lower part of the image, engraved in silver, features rocky mountainous terrain cradling a coniferous forest. The “sky” above the mountains and surrounding the raven is a stunning hologram reminiscent of the ever-changing, swirling rainbow of the aurora borealis.

Did you know…
  • The three-dimensional raven you see when you look at this coin doesn't exist in physical space!
  • Fascinatingly, when you look at a hologram, you are not seeing a physical image (like a photograph), but a “virtual” image that is actually produced on your retina. In fact, the physical image on the hologram's surface is a seemingly random series of dots

Packaging:
Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a graphic beauty box.

Nice silver coin. It could have been better if the colors were brighter.

Beautiful design and vibrant colours

This is one of my favorites. I agree with the previous comment that the coin shows well under sunlight. Just by turning the coin to different angles, you will get a spectrum of vibrant colours - sometimes more blue and yellow and sometimes more pink and purple. I am attaching one photo taken indoor next to the window. I am sure if I had taken the photo outdoor under direct sunlight, the effect would have been even more striking.

BEAUTIFUL COLOUR UNDER THE SUNLIGHT

I COLLECT RARE COINS AND THIS IS ONE OF THEM, BILLIANT COLOURS & CHANGE OF COLOURS WHEN MOVE YOUR HAND'S POSITION UNDER SUNLIGHT. CAN NOT UNDERSTAND ALL THE NEGATIVE FEEDBACKS FOR SAYING NO COLOUR WHEN YOU DON'T TAKE THE TIME TO REALLY UNDERSTAND AND LOOK AT IT AS IT SHOULD BE.

I found the design idea intriguing and was captivated by the hologram when viewed on the web site. However, the angle required to fully display the brilliance of the hologram effect is very narrow. After returning and reordering this coin, I was unable to get one without dust specks and other debris inside the capsule. Quality control on this coin was just not there.

Bob

Hi Bob, We're sorry to hear you're disappointed with the hologram image/colors on the coin. The colours on the coin may not look exactly the same as the image on the Mint.ca product page because it is a digital rendering, not a photograph. If you'd like you may return the coin for a full refund within 30 days of purchase.
