About the Design:

The reverse design brings together the use of colour, precision engraving and an innovative design to create a one-of-a-kind numismatic maze. A small brass ball rolls freely along the engraved circular pathway that forms the maze, while multiple paths provide the challenge of getting the ball to the bull's eye in the centre of the reverse. In the background is a partial view of a Canadian icon that is recognized worldwide: the beautiful red maple leaf that proudly adorns our national flag. The reverse includes the engraved word "CANADA" and the year "2016". The obverse features the face value
"20 DOLLARS" and the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

For your safety: Keep the coin securely in its capsule at all times to ensure you don't risk losing the small ball, which could pose a choking hazard for young children.

Did you know…
  • Mazes have appeared in ancient Greek texts as far back as the 5th century BCE. In fact, it appears in one of the best-known Greek myths, Theseus and The Minotaur, in which Theseus becomes a Greek hero by navigating this maze and defeating the creature. From there, the idea spread and the puzzle has since been widely used around the world, from the architecture of early Christian churches to the lavish gardens at the Palace of Versailles in France.
  • What's the difference between a labyrinth and a maze? A labyrinth is said to have a single path that winds its way into the middle, which forces you to retrace your path to get back out; a maze has dead ends or many different paths and directions to choose from.
  • The first maze recorded in history was the Egyptian Labyrinth visited by the Greek writer Herodotus, but little remains of it today.
  • Hedge mazes date back to Roman times and had spread to England by the 16th century.

Comments about 1 oz. Pure Silver Coin – Maple Leaf Maze – Mintage: 8000 (2016):

I put this product on my desk so I can look at it. I read the other reviews that said not to take it and play with it outside of it's case so it'll just sit in there forever. The puzzle is really easy to solve if you keep it level but if you tilt too much the ball goes everywhere. I don't collect too many coins but this one was too fun to pass up!

If I had to do it again I would not buy it. I like all my previous purchases. As I bought 2 coins I will probably gift one and keep the other. I suppose it is unique . The case it comes in should be less easy to open. Good luck trying to find the ball.

Looking at the Maple Leaf Maze coin makes me smile and think, how creative the artist was in coming up with this unique design.
The coin is simple but bold, using only 3 colours, i.e. silver, red and brass.
It would be nice if the package included a couple more of the brass ball as its easy to loose, if case is opened.
To the RCM - continue to let the creative juices flow freely, unhindered.

Good afternoon and thank you for your question and interest in the RCM products. Sorry for the delay in my reply but I am happy to confirm that the brass ball weigh 0.037gms each. Hope you enjoy your coin ! All the best!

        • Q:

I have a further question....Since the little ball is made of "brass", will it tarnish or change colour (turn black) over time, making it rather unattractive rolling around the coin. I heard rodium-plating over silver (to prevent colour change) may be a better choice? Why was brass chosen? Thank you.

Thank you for your question. The Royal Canadian Mint research & development team started the testing process long before we brought the product to market and tested the coin and the ball in various conditions to eliminate as much as possible the potential problems that could occur, we sure hope it won't in the long term. The available size ball were really limited but we will take your suggestion in consideration, thank you!

        • Q:

As one plays with this coin, aiming the small silver bead through the maze "track", will the bead scratch the surface of the coin (i.e, the polished silver portion of the maze)? If it does, I think the coin will be unattractive -- all scratche up. I have ordered this coin but am rethinking about it.
