Design:

Designed by Canadian artist Matt Bowen, your coin features a three-dimensional depiction of a breaching humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) in all of its breathtaking splendour. Engraved in outstanding detail, the background depicts the waters off Canada's coastline, where a lighthouse can be found on the headland rocks in the distance. The surface of the ocean is itself filled with magnificent detail, alternating between soft waves and the smooth ripples caused by the whale's sudden emergence. But the star of the show is undeniably the whale itself: fashioned through a thermoforming process, the embossed whale stirs up foamy waves and a stream of ocean spray as it launches itself almost clear out of the water! Colour highlights the rough textural details along its tremendous pectoral fins, as well as the distinctive bumps on its head and neck. Throughout the design, light is cleverly conveyed by the coin's silver surface, which shines like sunlight on a bright summer day.

Packaging:

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a black beauty box.

Comments about 1 oz. Pure Silver Coin – Three-Dimensional Breaching Whale – Mintage: 7500 (2017):

The coin I received had a 2mm glob of glue between the coin and the PET film. The PET film was not angled at all from the surface of the coin. It was instead parallel to the coin and flat so the effect was 2D on 2D.

IF the film was angled and CURVED, and the bottom edge was touching the coin, I would have kept the it. But, as it is, paying $18 more for a picture 2mm above the coin is not worth it.

Very disappointed with this so called "3D". The pictures on the website give misleading impression. Now everyone must know they can cut and paste films to their coin collection to make "unique 3D" coins. Nice try.

Comments about 1 oz. Pure Silver Coin – Three-Dimensional Breaching Whale – Mintage: 7500 (2017):

I purchased this coin based on the front view and the promise of a 3D coin.

The PET film glued onto a silver coin was a major disappointment when I received it. I instantly loathed it.

This coin does not represent the quality and artistry I have come to know and appreciate. Hopefully this design will be a first and last for the mint.

Comments about 1 oz. Pure Silver Coin – Three-Dimensional Breaching Whale – Mintage: 7500 (2017):

Given that this was also a Master Club special edition coin, I was hopeful that it would be something special given the first picture at the time.

Unfortunately, I've now returned this coin -- only 1 of 2 coins I've ever returned from my years of platinum level membership.

The lo-res image of a whale on the thin curved plastic (PET) is glued to the surface of the coin. It is also difficult to make out the 2017 date on the attempted rough water surface.

If this was remade with a whale in silver (not completely 3D but high relief) and a blue glass splash at its base, there may be hope for this design.

Would have paid more for a whale made of murano glass- 3 dimensional

am surprised that the Mint would produce such a poor quality re: whale. Coin is okay-nothing special

This was disappointing to receive. The whale looks so poorly done that it is truly a very poor 3D quality in its undertaking. it may be original but the implementation is poorly completed.
it is way to thin and the whale itself should have had some curvature to make it look 3D . Not Impressed
this is a poor quality 3D coin!

Received this as a gift today and was disappointed. It looks like a piece of paper just stuck to the coin. It's not truly what I would call a 3-dimensional coin. Am returning it.

Just got mine today and my first impression was ... "What on earth is that!?!"

The whale doesn't look real and it look cheap!!!

If you look from side way, the whale looks so thin (because it was made with PET film...)!

                        I don't get this!

Why sometime RCM make some incredible nice/valuable coins and now some of the coins are ... terrible!

Personally, I think this coin is terrible! Not recommended!
