THIRD COIN IN SERIES! Night sky re-created with black rhodium plating! A must-have!

Swiftly travelling across Canada’s wild landscapes, the wolf (Canis lupus) makes its presence known when it releases its unmistakable howl into the night. Our exploration of Canada at night continues with this third coin in the Nocturnal by Nature series, using selective black rhodium plating to set the mood for a moonlit serenade.

A coin you will want to show to friends and family! Order today!

Special features:
  • THIRD COIN IN SERIES!  Your coin includes the third-time use of black rhodium plating that lends itself perfectly to recreating the dark night sky and allows the moon's uniquely frosted finish to shine through. Previous coins in the series include:
    • Barn Owl (currently sold out on
    • Little Brown Bat (still available)
  • AN INNOVATIVE TWIST ON TRADITIONAL WILDLIFE PORTRAITS! An artful mix of engraving, selective plating and finishes come together in this unforgettable portrait of a species whose howl is synonymous with the Canadian wilderness.
  • BLACK AS THE NIGHT! Selectively plated with black rhodium, a precious metal, for enhanced value and aesthetic appeal. To achieve the look of a nighttime setting, layers of rhodium plating are carefully built up to achieve just the right level of darkness for a moonlit night.
  • SILVERY MOONLIGHT! Left unplated, your coin’s 99.99% pure silver surface mimics the luminous effect of a full moon faintly illuminating the wolf from behind and casting shadows across the dark landscape.
  • COLOUR SHIFT! When you tilt your coin from side to side, you’ll see a subtle (and natural) colour shift in the rhodium plating—from black to a gun-metal grey, even hints of purple or blue. An added layer of artistic detail!
  • INCLUDES SERIALIZED CERTIFICATE! The Royal Canadian Mint certifies all of its collector coins. Most of these are serialized certifications, meaning that each certificate is given a unique number, starting at 1.
  • LOW MINTAGE: Only 7,000 coins will be made available worldwide. Hurry and order yours today before they are all gone!
  • ONE-OUNCE 99.99% PURE SILVER COIN! Your coin is GST/HST exempt!

Designed by Canadian artist Claude Thivierge, your coin travels deep into one of Canada’s forests, to catch a glimpse of a species whose haunting cry defines the call of the wild. Black rhodium plating sets the tone for a nighttime encounter in a clearing, where, viewed in three-quarter profile, Canis lupus raises its head to the sky and releases its howl into the winter night. Behind the wolf, the coin’s polished silver surface is left unplated to mimic the light of the engraved full moon, which faintly illuminates the landscape below, and the wolf from behind. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Did you know…
  • While it may sound chilling to us, the wolf’s cry is a key way of communicating with others, whether it’s a rallying cry to pack members or a warning to others encroaching on its territory.
  • The wolf doesn’t necessarily howl at the moon: by lifting its head up towards the sky, the wolf is better able to project its call so that the sound carries farther.
  • Wolf howls may also seem more frequent during winter. It’s not a coincidence: the wolf’s mating season runs from January to April, and a wolf may use its howl to attract a female.

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a black beauty box.

Took a Shot. Was a Hit.

I rarely do Comments. This is one of those times; because while this "looked" good, I really did not know what to expect. A 'blacked out' Coin?! Rhodium for "effect"?! The Howling Wolf is a very attractive addition to an eclectic collection. The finish is flawless. The motif / artwork is great. It is a pleasing piece. While there is no such thing as a "Bargain" at the RCM, this one is "worth it", IMHO.

This coin is so attractive, compliments my other two in the set , great detail , would recommend this coin

Beautiful addition!!!

Really beautiful coin!! This is my favorite in the set so far, although I do enjoy each one for it's different qualities. I believe it's a wonderful set to own and one that i'll enjoy for years to come. Just a suggestion but in my opinion a raccoon would be a wonderful forth addition to this set. Thank you for yet another lovely coin.

These Coins are a Howl!

This Wolf is a fantastic addition to my two other rhodium-plated coins (Bat and Owl)! The three of them displayed together are stunning! Everyone who has seen the display has had the same reaction of awe; all having commented on the coins' beauty and uniqueness.
