About each coin design:

First coin: The City on the Edge of Forever
Your coin design recreates a key scene from the 1967 Star Trek episode, The City on the Edge of Forever. Vibrant colour brings to life the engraved image of Captain James T. Kirk (played by Canadian actor William Shatner) and Mr. Spock (portrayed by Leonard Nimoy); both in their famous Starfleet uniforms, they stand among the ruins before the oversized, ring-shaped entity known as
The Guardian of Forever. Augmented reality technology enhances the overall design, recreating the illuminated qualities of the time-travelling portal that is an object of wonder. Engraved in a special
Star Trek font is the word "CANADA", the face value "20 DOLLARS" and the year "2016".

Did you know…

  • The City on the Edge of Forever is frequently cited as one of the greatest TV episodes of all time.
  • The episode was one of four Star Trek episodes nominated for a Hugo Award in 1968, and won for Best Dramatic Presentation; it would be the only television series to do so until 25 years later.
  • It is also the only Star Trek episode to win a Writers Guild of America (WGA) Award.
  • It is one of several episodes that were digitally re-mastered, with changes that include enhanced shots of the planet as seen from space.
  • After several script changes, filming took just a little over a week in February 1967 and cost considerably more than the average budget for an episode; in fact, it was the first season's most expensive episode produced.

Second coin: Mirror, Mirror
Your coin design recreates a key scene from the memorable 1967 Star Trek episode Mirror, Mirror. Selective colour enhances the engraved image of an alternate version of Mr. Spock (portrayed by Leonard Nimoy) performing a Vulcan mind meld on Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (portrayed by DeForest Kelley). McCoy bears a fearful expression while Spock sports an uncharacteristic goatee and altered uniform—evidence that the away team is in a mirror universe where their fellow crewmembers are behaving very differently. Engraved in a special Star Trek font is the word "CANADA", the face value "20 DOLLARS" and the year "2016".

Did you know…

  • This was the first introduction of Star Trek's Mirror Universe, but it wouldn't be the last—decades later, the concept was revisited in spin-off series, publishing, and more.
  • As head of security, "Mirror" Sulu is seen wearing a red uniform in this episode, which made him the first Star Trek character to appear in all three colours of the Starfleet uniform. He typically wears the gold uniform associated with command, but he briefly wore the blue uniform of science and medical personnel in a previous episode.
  • Mirror, Mirror also marks the first episode in which Scotty (played by Canadian actor James Doohan) addresses Captain Kirk by his first name, Jim. Otherwise, McCoy and Spock are the few to speak familiarly to Kirk.
  • Throughout the series, McCoy is frequently at odds with Spock over the Vulcan tendency to favour logic over emotion; despite their bickering, the two share a mutual respect and a deep friendship.

DeForest Kelley, who portrayed McCoy, had originally been offered the role of Spock in 1964; he turned it down. Before taking the role as the ship's doctor, whose catchphrases include "I'm a doctor, not a…"

Third coin: The Trouble with Tribbles
Your coin design recreates a key scene that has remained a fan favourite, even beyond the Star Trek community. Selective colour brings to life the engraved image of Captain James T. Kirk (portrayed by Canadian actor William Shatner) in his green Starfleet uniform. He stands half-buried in a pile of small, furry creatures known as Tribbles, which have fallen out of an overhead compartment. Engraved in a special Star Trek font is the word "CANADA", the face value "20 DOLLARS" and the year "2016".

Did you know…

  • The grain's Canadian origin is a reference to a 1953 breeding program at the University of Manitoba, where efforts focused on developing triticale (a wheat-rye hybrid) as a high-yield, drought-tolerant food crop.
  • It took eight different takes to capture the avalanche of Tribbles depicted on the coin's reverse.
  • Hundreds of Tribbles had to be created for this episode, which originally aired on December 29, 1967. Many were sewn using rolls of carpet, with surgical balloons or beanbags stuffed into them. Others were stuffed with a mechanical toy so that their movement could be captured on camera.
  • The sounds "emitted" by Tribbles are a unique combination of cooing doves, screeching owls and shrinking balloons!

Comments about 1 oz. Pure Silver Coloured 3-Coin Subscription – Iconic Star TrekTM Scenes (2016):

Overall I think all of the Star Trek coins for 2016 are awesome! The quality of the Canadian coins are just not the same as the Perth Mint coins struck for Tuvalu. With almost all of my Canadian coins there's small silicone flakes all over the coins. I understand its a part of the minting process, but you would think RCM would at least blow them off before shipping them out. If they come out with other Star Trek coins in the future I will still definitely buy them.

Comments about 1 oz. Pure Silver Coloured 3-Coin Subscription – Iconic Star TrekTM Scenes (2016):

The three coins that make up this set are by far the most visually striking of all of the Royal Canadian Mint's 2016 "Star Trek" coins. For Star Trek fans, the images recapture critical moments of our favorite episodes, more so than any of the other coins.

I agree with other comments. This set of three coins needs a display case to showcase them all at one glance, and to compare them side-by-side.
I understand it may be too late and complex to provide a wooden case free with purchase of this subscription.

But surely it is possible to offer for sale a wooden box for these three 38mm coins with an outer box which has a colourful graphic design that hints at the beautiful coins inside.

There are precedents for this. The "Face Value Collector Case" was offered for sale years after some of those coins were sold. It was a bargain at its $29.95 price. There is also the "Royal Canadian Mint Coin Collection Case" which holds 34mm and 38mm coins, but is much pricier at $129.95. These "Iconic Star Trek Scenes" are 38mm and would fit in that box, but they would be mixed in with coins of other themes. I would prefer one case to hold these 3 coins to showcase a unique set.

What would be a fair price for such packaging, sold separately from the coins? Somewhere between $29.95 & $129.95 ~ the prices for those other cases. Perhaps the RCM could offer for sale a generic and beautiful wooden box which holds three 38mm coins and includes an outer graphic box with the buyer's choice of designs. Plain black "RCM Black Beauty Box" or other more specific designs for other 3 coin series ~ subscriptions or not.

In addition to this "Iconic Star Trek Scenes", the "Lost Ships in Canadian Waters" is a 3 coin 38mm series that would be a good fit, as would the "Prehistoric Animals"; "Autumn in Canada" & "The Universe: Glow-in-the-Dark". series. By offering for purchase one wooden case designed for three 38mm coins, collectors who own any of those series (and others I am sure) would be happy to buy such a case. This is especially true if purchase included an outer "Beauty Box" that is specifically designed for a particular series.

I understand that manufacturing three 38mm coin wooden boxes would be expensive. However, by offering it for pre-order sale, and manufacturing them to demand, the overall cost could be held down to a reasonable level. Creating specific outer beauty boxes may add cost, but surely design and printing them would not be as expensive as including free wooden boxes with subscriptions.

I hope that the RCM considers this proposal. I would also appreciate that other RCM customers who read my comments here and like this idea post comments in support.
      Thanks.

RCM....if you offer subscriptions, where is the custom case to hold all three coins in this series. If someone is purchasing a stand alone, then it is fine to sell with graphic beauty box.

A graphic beauty case for this collection would have been more appropriate when subscribing.

Please listen RCM. It is not too late to add a 'CUSTOM BEAUTY CASE" to hold all three coins.

Thank you for your question. The obverse (the other side of each coin) of each coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Susanna Blunt. You can see this image on the web page by clicking the down arrows under all the coin images on the right side, as the obverse image is hidden when you first come to the page, and so you need to expand the list of images.
