A tribute to Newfoundland's wartime contributions! Order today!

July 1 is a day of remembrance for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. On that day 100 years ago, the 1st Newfoundland Regiment advanced on the German front lines near the French village of Beaumont-Hamel in the first ground attack of the Somme Offensive. This coin captures the intensity of that devastating battle with the poignant image of a soldier advancing under enemy fire near the Danger Tree: a lone, war-torn marker on the heavily defended terrain.

  • HONOURS THE VALOUR AND COURAGE OF THE 1ST NEWFOUNDLAND REGIMENT! This regiment suffered a devastating number of casualties during the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel—the first of the British-led Somme Offensive that would characterize the war in 1916. Your coin is a poignant, heartfelt tribute to the wartime contributions and sacrifice made by the people of Newfoundland during the First World War.

About the Design:

Designed by Canadian artist Silvia Pecota, your coin poignantly conveys the bravery and tragedy of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel where on the morning of July 1, 1916, the soldiers of the 1st Newfoundland Regiment participated in the first ground attack of the Somme Offensive. In the foreground, a young soldier advances in formation across no man's land toward enemy lines. The battle-scarred terrain provides little protective cover for the soldiers, who are in full view of the enemy as they contend with the tangle of barbed wire defenses. The intensity of the artillery and machine gun fire that awaited the Newfoundlanders is evident throughout this intricately engraved scene, particularly in the foreground where the soldier assumes a slightly crouched stance while he courageously moves forward with his rifle and bayonet. In the background, the gnarled appearance of the "Danger Tree" is particularly symbolic as its remnants marked the spot where the Newfoundlanders would face the most intense fire, and where so many of them would fall. Selective gold plating showcases the winged figure of "Victory" as it appeared on the Victory Medal, which was awarded to the allied soldiers of the First World War.

I would not buy this particular coin

This coin is well detailed. However it is presented under the banner of Canada. At the time of this battle Newfoundland was a Dominion of the British Empire. Actually one of the first. Due to this inaccuracy, I cannot endorse it. However, it is nicely minted.

Does not reflect the Newfoundland Memorial at Beaumont-Hamel

Disappointed in that the coin doesn't reflect the Newfoundland Memorial at Beaumont- Hamel the proud caribou mounted on the granite facing west, toward Newfoundland, very powerful, both visually and mentally. So disappointed this moment not captured in your coin. So, what to expect next year with this Vimy Ridge issue? Based on what you presented with the Beaumont-Hamel coin, I certainly do bot expect to see the twin obelisks! Please tell me I'll not be disappointed.

4

Beautiful coin and a very nice tribute to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and the Blue Puttees. My only complaint about this coin is that it should have had selective colouring. The Blue Puttees should be coloured blue on this coin.

This coin can be part of an 8 coin series. Is it Coin number 1 in the series? We have other coins depicting war, so it's hard to tell if this is a new series or a continuing one. I don't know why you don't show all the coins in a series....very poor marketing strategy and on top of that your web site is a pain to get around on. It's like pushing mud through a keyhole.
