In 1916, tragedy struck at the heart of a young nation when the Centre Block of Canada's stately Parliament Buildings was suddenly engulfed in flames. By morning, the still-smouldering outer walls were all that remained of the original landmark—save for the magnificent Library of Parliament, whose unlikely preservation became an inspiring national symbol of resilience in the face of adversity.

An excellent addition to your coin display focused around Canadian history. Order your coin today!

Special features:
  • OUR WORLD-RENOWN ANNUAL $100 GOLD COIN! Our annual $100 gold coin celebrates the centennial anniversary of the preservation of the Library of Parliament, which survived the tragic fire that devastated the original Centre Block of Parliament in 1916.
  • POWERFUL SNAPSHOT OF A NATIONAL TRAGEDY: Captures some of the heroic efforts to combat the raging, fast-moving blaze and prevent it from spreading to the Library on that fateful winter night.
  • ENGRAVED WITH A METICULOUS ATTENTION TO DETAIL: The Library's ornate architecture is masterfully captured in this portrait of a proud national landmark that endures as a link to Canada's past.
  • STRIKING PROOF FINISH: The contrast created by the frosted raised elements against the mirror background brings an added sense of dimension to the design, which exemplifies the artistry and unparalleled craftsmanship that is associated with the Royal Canadian Mint.
  • Your coin has a limited mintage of only 1,500 worldwide.

Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Tony Bianco, your coin transports you to the fateful night of
February 3, 1916 as you bear witness to the tragic fire that has engulfed the Centre Block of Parliament in Ottawa, Ontario. As flames and smoke suddenly billow into the night sky, firefighters quickly rush onto the scene; near the western rear of the Centre Block, one firefighter stands ahead of a steamer as he douses the flames with water, while two more rush across the snow-covered landscape to join the fray. In the midst of all the chaos and tragedy, the towering spire of the Library of Parliament remains an inspiring sight as it seems to remain untouched by the blaze, thanks in part to the fireproof doors that helped protect this architectural jewel and its irreplaceable collection.

Packaging:
Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a black beauty box.

I bought this special edition because my wife is a firefighter. Its not pure gold and I will only buy pure silver or gold NON-SPECIAL editions from now on. I believe you pay far over spot for special editions and that you won't ever get that money back when selling. On top of that, my wife didn't like the gift thus the gold was cold!

                        • A:

You need to do your own math on this. 12 grams of 14K gold is 12 grams of 58.3% of pure gold (24K). So find the troy ounce price of gold today, and then multiply the price by 0.538 and 12/31.1 since one troy ounce = 31.1 grams. So, (12/31.1) X 0.538 X (price of gold today) = Result. Remember that one troy ounce is NOT the same as one ounce. You can always find most of the info on the coin on the mint.ca site and the updated gold prices can easily be found on Yahoo Finance. And yes, the premiums are quite high on such coins since the minting process is expensive no matter what the gold content is. I hope this helps!

YES you will pay the TAX...And can "Anonymous" please say who they really are!! ie The MINT Representative!!!! And please stop using 'generic/sales person' answers for some of the questions submitted by long time collectors/genuine collectors who actually take real pride in collecting coins and really appreciate quality that the Mint normally produces! However, when they make an 'error', simply admit it, correct it and move on and continue to produce the normal "high Quality" coins that you normally produce!!!!!!!

Thank you for your question. The coin design of 2001 was of the interior of the Library of Parliament, while this coin celebrates the centennial anniversary of the preservation of the Library of Parliament, which survived the tragic fire that devastated the original Centre Block of Parliament in 1916.
