In Canada's far-northern latitudes, where solitude and beauty meet, nature takes centre stage with a celestial light show that once seen, is certainly not forgotten. The sight of the aurora borealis is both mystical and mesmerizing as shimmering waves of dream-like colours dance overhead, weaving their way across the star-studded sky. Joining in with a chorus of their own, wolves pierce the silence of the night with a howl that seems to linger in the crisp air. Whether it is directed at the pack, the moon or the aurora itself, this haunting cry of the wild further heightens the sense of awe felt by those who bear witness to this colourful opus, and envy in others who long to experience it.

In the natural world, the aurora borealis occurs when charged particles emitted by a solar flare collide with the atoms in Earth's atmosphere, creating bursts of light called photons. When enough photons are released, the result is a luminous mix of green, red, yellow and orange colours that light up the dark night sky.

BEST VIEWED IN THE DARK! The full effect of your coin is best viewed in the dark after placing it in a light source for 30 to 60 seconds. This enhances the ethereal quality of the aurora borealis by adding a varying intensity of green, yellow, pink and orange hues, while recreating the soft glow of a moonlit night on the snow-covered landscape below.

An unforgettable addition to your collection allowing you to appreciate this natural phenomenon year-round! Hurry and order yours today before they're all gone!

Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Julius Csotonyi, your coin brings together rich colours and detailed engraving to recreate the breathtaking beauty of a winter night in Nunavut's Auyuittuq National Park. With the imposing vertical cliff of Thor Peak looming in the background, two Baffin Island wolves (Canis lupus manningi) stand upslope in the frozen river valley where they lift their muzzles to the sky and release their howl into the crisp air. Nature's most colourful light show seems to move to this haunting serenade as the aurora borealis arches overhead, bridging the tall granite peaks and the wolves.

Packaging:
Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a custom clamshell with a graphic beauty box.

A Gimmick Coin That Works

5

I have bought a number of gimmick coins from the mint: glow-in-the-dark, holograms etc. They seldom work or match the photos in ads. Northern Lights in the Moonlight does work! Brilliant colour to start with. Expose it to a light source for 60 secs, then enter a dark room and watch the coin glow. Where other coins have disappointed, this doesn't. Very nice!

Hi what does it mean when an item is archived? Can one still sign up for this subscription? Thank you Julia

Julia

Hi Julia, An archived coin means that the Royal Canadian Mint is not selling it anymore. I'd recommend contacting any of our authorized coin dealers to see if they have any. Here's the link to our dealer locator page. http://www.mint.ca/store/mint/customer-service/dealer-locator-1400026?cat=Dealer+locator&nId=1400026&nodeGroup=Customer+Service

Is this coin in a series?

Rose Anne

Thank you for your question. While there was a similar previous coin design, this coin is not a planned series, and so cannot predict at this point if another similar coin will be designed in the future. Please watch your email inbox for any email alerts regarding new coin launches.

Is this the first coin that doesn't have CANADA and the denomination on the reverse? What is the significance of the lines on the obverse?

CoinOperator

The firefly coin (#1 in the series) also had CANADA and the denomination on the obverse. http://www.mint.ca/store/coins/2-oz.-fine-silver-glowinthedark-coin-%E2%80%93-moonlight-fireflies-%E2%80%93-mintage-4000-2015-prod2400152 As for the lines - this is simply a design element that we use to create more a visually interesting coin.

Will these coin be a series and if so how many are planned. Is there a fair amount of engraving under the paint. Kudos on lowering the mintages on these coins.

Hi I bought two of these thinking these were second in series to the two oz dragonfly last year (coins I think Are just gorgeous by the way)....please confirm. Also, why doesnt the mint state these things boldy in the description so we have no doubt? I have been caught by this in the past! Thanks so much!

Stackergirl

Thank you for your questions. Both the fireflies and northern lights are part of the moonlight series. And text is highlighted so as to help grab people's attention in case they are skimming the web copy quickly.
