While many of NASCAR's race tracks have their own claim to fame, DAYTONA International Speedway reigns supreme as the home of NASCAR's most prestigious race: the DAYTONA 500®. NASCAR fans and drivers speak of the speedway with a certain reverence, and rightfully so—Daytona Beach is the birthplace of NASCAR, and its legendary tri-oval has borne witness to moments of great triumph since its 1959 opening. Now, after more than two years of extensive redevelopment, the stage is set for the debut of the $400 million reimagining of an icon  in time for the 2016 Rolex 24 At DAYTONA® and, of course, the DAYTONA 500®.

About the Design:

Designed by Canadian artist Julius Csotonyi, your medallion features an engraved rendition of the iconic DAYTONA International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. With the famous checkered flag waving in the background, the image provides a detailed glimpse at the newly expanded grandstand that is set to open in January 2016. The obverse provides an overhead view of the sprawling motorsports stadium; in the top right corner, the famous Speedway's frontstretch is dotted with race cars as the DAYTONA 500 is underway—a momentous start to what will surely be another exhilarating NASCAR season!

Did you know…
  • The very first 500-mile race held at DAYTONA International Speedway was such a close contest that it took three days for a winner to be declared, and only after the careful study of photographs and video.
  • The DAYTONA 500 is the most well known of all the races that take place at the Speedway, where nearly 200,000 fans in attendance make it a must-attend event.
  • The 1979 edition of the DAYTONA 500 was the first of its kind to be broadcast live on television in its entirety.
  • In 2007, a record of 61 teams arrived to compete in the DAYTONA 500; NASCAR races are limited to a field of 43 cars, meaning 18 teams did not qualify for the event.
  • The Speedway is one of the NASCAR venues that require the use of restrictor plates; implemented in 1988 as a safety measure to protect drivers by limiting a motor's power output on tracks capable of producing dangerous top speeds.
  • Drivers at DAYTONA regularly employ a strategy known as "drafting;" to do so, the front car teams up with a trailing car to create a vacuum, at times allowing the rear car to gather speed and effectively slingshot past the front car to get ahead.

It is in a cabinet in the original case. It is very well done. It is very realistic.

Good for the NASCAR enthusiasts. The previous coin was colorized and was much more attractive, this is not and does not have the impact of the previous one. I got this basically to keep the theme going.

I hoped as a medallion rather than a coin, the design and finish would be more innovative.

What sort of paperwork is in the box? Is there anything explaining the new stadium, Daytona Rising or the history of the track or stadium? Is there a certificate of authenticity or other "official" paperwork from the mint or the International Speedway? Also, is the medallion encased in a carrier? I would guess it's not "sealed" but maybe in a plastic "coin holder"? Hopefully it's not just the medallion and a pretty box...

Uncle Dave

Hi Uncle Dave, Yes, there is a certificate of authenticity with the medallion details. The medallion is enclosed in a plastic capsule but you can access it.

What is the "face" value of the coin?

Mo

Hi Mo - this is a medallion and not a coin. Medallions do not have a denomination and are not legal tender and as such have no face value.

Anonymous

An ounce of silver is roughly $14. So the face value is less than $7.

anonymous

I think that the Mint should be more explicit that this has no face value.... just to be clear. Perhaps state: Medallion (no value as a circulating coin) ?

Bill

I was just wondering how this NASCAR coin relates to Canada?

James

This medallion from the Royal Canadian Mint is a tribute to racing fans across North America, including the more than 6 million NASCAR fans in Canada. The medallion was produced to celebrate the opening of the newly renovated Daytona International Speedway in January 2016, also known as the "World Center of Racing."
