The year 1967 represented a momentous time in Canada's history, when the young nation enthusiastically celebrated the 100th anniversary of Confederation. As part of that year-long celebration, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a unique set of Canadian circulation coins that bore a reverse design by acclaimed artist Alex Colville. Strikingly simple but unquestionably elegant, these now-iconic coins featured animals symbolic of Canada's natural legacy, in an eloquent display of the artist's vision of the nation—a vision just as relevant today, as Canada celebrates its 150th anniversary.

The beloved 1967 Canadian Centennial coins are truly unforgettable; they are coveted collectibles that are prized for their historical value and aesthetic beauty, but also cherished for igniting the passion of many life-long coin collectors.

A perfect gift for an Alex Colville fan! Don't be disappointed, order yours today!

Design:

All seven coins are crafted in 99.99% pure silver, with each one bearing a similar reverse design as the 1967 Centennial set of circulation coins designed by Canadian artist Alex Colville. Precision engraving recreates the iconic rock dove, rabbit, mackerel, bobcat, wolf and Canada goose featured on the 1-cent, 5-cent, 10-cent, 25-cent, 50-cent and 1-dollar coins, respectively. The set also includes a $20 coin, which shines brightly thanks to the full gold plating that beautifully showcases the engraved Coat of Arms—as does the gold-plated 1-cent coin. Each coin has been carefully polished to ensure a stunning proof finish that showcases the artistry and expert craftsmanship behind this timely tribute to some of Canada's most beloved coins. The obverse features the second effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin.

Did you know…
  • For the Centennial coins, Canadian artists, sculptors and designers were invited to submit their coinage designs in a competition launched in 1964.
  • A $2,500 prize was to be awarded for the winning design in each of the coin denominations.
  • Without a clear winner, the panel of judges invited five more artists to submit their coin concept ideas.
  • On April 20, 1966, a winner was announced: Canadian painter Alex Colville, who is remembered today for famous pieces such as Horse and Train and To Prince Edward Island.
  • In 2012, The Canadian Design Resource declared the 1967 Centennial coins to be among the all-time best Canadian designs.

I grew up with these coins in circulation as a kid and loved the design. Thank you for maintaining the authentic numismatic design of 1967. Excellent quality and presentation- this one will be a keeper. Please bring back a 1973 reproduction coin set of the Canadian Mounted Police.

Has the price of the proof set over double in the cost this year?? I only remember ever paying no more than $100.00 for this set in previous years....

Jun

Thank you for your question. In most years there are 2 versions of the proof set available, one in base metal and one in pure silver. With the 50th anniversary of these particular coins we decided to release only a pure silver set.

Josh (Product Team)

My 2017 Commemorative proof set 1967 Centennial coin's inner slip doesn't specify that there is selective gold plating on the $20 coin or the penny. Is this an error or typo?

cam

Thank you for your question. The gold plating is listed in the section of the certificate titled "The Coins".

Josh (Product Team)

I have a set of the 100 anniversary coins stamped 1867 - 1967. If these coins represent 150th anniversary shouldn't they be stamped 1867 - 2017, not 1967 - 2017?

Bob

hi Bob, thanks for your question. With the issue of this set we wanted to note the original year of these iconic designs by Alex Colville, so that's why we dated them 1967.

Josh (Product Team)

Read the response to the $20 coin being a silver dollar not loonie or two pine because they weren't around but why was the penny gold plated and not made of copper like the original design?

Victoria

Hi Victoria, All of the coins in this set are made of a more pure silver than their original composition. The gold plating is a nod to the different colour it would have had in the original set while maintaining the overall value of the set. The inclusion of copper would also have made the set taxable. thank you for your question.

Josh (Product Team)

How many karats are in the gold plating on the 2 coins?

Peter

Our gold plating is 24 karat.

Josh (Product Team)

Hello Peter, the gold plating is 24 karat

Josh (Product Team)

What is the total weight of Troy ounces for all the coins

Sgt Brian

Hi Sgt Brian, The combined weight of all seven coins is 1.9631 troy ounces, which includes the gold plating on the 1 cent and 20 dollar coins.

Chad

I see that the 20 dollar gold plated coin is only 9.25 gram but the Loonie is 23.17 gram? Why is the Loonie so much Heavier than the 20 dollar?

Colobo

Thank you for your question. These coins have very different diameters, and therefore have differing weights. As diameters of coins change, so does their gauge, or thickness, this also affects the total coin weight.

Josh (Product Team)

To expand on Josh's answer, the $1 coin in this set is a 'Silver Dollar' not a 'Loonie'. Unlike regular proof sets, this commemorative set of the 1967 coins does not include a 'Loonie' (or a Toonie for that matter) because they didn't exist when these coins were originally issued.

67coinnut

I think Colobo is questioning why the lighter $20 coin has a higher face value than the $1 coin, when both are made of silver (except for the gold plating on the $20). However in the original 1967 set the $20 coin was made of 90% gold, and so even though it was smaller it was of a higher value. The 2017 set has kept the sizes of the two coins the same as the originals, but the $20 coin now is made (mainly) of silver. This has allowed the set to be kept more affordable and I think it was a brilliant idea!
