UNIQUE! Convex coin with colour and glow-in-the-dark effect recreates a unique view of earth from space!

To fly in space is to see the reality of Earth, alone. The experience changed my life and my attitude toward life itself. - Dr. Roberta Bondar

Few can lay claim to seeing our planet from space; but for Dr. Roberta Bondar, Canada's first woman astronaut and the world's first neurologist in space, the experience represents the fulfillment of a long-cherished dream. Throughout the mission she used her expertise to conduct over 40 advanced scientific experiments, helping to understand the body's ability to recover from exposure to space—a great contribution to the future of space travel!

A beautiful gift for the future scientist in your family! Order today!

Special features:
  • A NEW TAKE ON A CONVEX COIN! Share the wonder of viewing Canada from space: your coin's unique shape lends itself perfectly to recreating the curvature of our planet!
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK COLOUR! Photoluminescent elements add a new twist on the view of our planet—especially Canada, which features prominently!
  • A HEARTFELT TRIBUTE TO A CANADIAN HERO! The Royal Canadian Mint proudly pays homage to one of the most important Canadians of our time, Dr. Roberta Bondar, and her historic space mission 25 years ago!
  • A PERSONAL TOUCH! As an added salute, we've included a miniature depiction of the shuttle from Dr. Roberta Bondar's personal insignia patch.
  • AN EXTRAORDINARY ADDITION TO YOUR COLLECTION!  With a low mintage, unique blend of technologies and world-class engraving, this limited coin is sure to be a prized piece in your collection—this is not a coin to pass up!
  • LOW MINTAGE: Only 8,500 coins will be made available worldwide.
  • 99.99% PURE SILVER COIN! Your coin is GST/HST exempt!

Design:

Designed by Canadian artist Alexandra Lefort, your coin combines colour with glow-in-the-dark effects to recreate a breathtaking view of Earth from space. The partial view of the Western Hemisphere places the focus on North America—specifically Canada—while the application of colour captures the nuances that characterize the different regions, and the different blues that mark the ocean depth. Within the outer band that frames the field, the 25th anniversary of Dr. Roberta Bondar's historic space mission is commemorated by the number "25" and a miniature depiction of the space shuttle Discovery, as it appeared on Dr. Bondar's personal mission crest.

Did you know…
  • Dr. Roberta Bondar has the honour of being Canada's first woman astronaut in space, and only the second Canadian.
  • When the formation of a Canadian space program was announced in 1983, Dr. Bondar quickly applied to become an astronaut. She was one of the six Canadians selected from over 4,300 applicants!
  • The purpose of Dr. Bondar's flight, Space Shuttle mission STS-42, was to study the effects of weightlessness on different materials and life.
  • Dr. Bondar's role in the mission contributed significantly to the Canadian Space Program, but the experiments were not solely on behalf of our nation—they were on behalf of 16 different countries!
  • In honour of her achievements, several schools across Canada have adopted her name.  It's not uncommon to see "Roberta Bondar School" in many Canadian cities!

Don't ask the impossible!

As a Yank, when I first got the coin I looked at it and thought "Hey, they cut off Florida!" Then I remembered: "Ohhh, right - CANADA!" I love the way the daylight view shows the different surfaces of the land, and the night view shows the population density, a great balance of natural and artificial. I agree that the glow-in-the-dark feature never looked as spectacular as the pictures, but if you want to show it off to best advantage, take the coin into a dark room (nighttime works best), wait for your eyes to dark-adapt, shine a bright light directly on the coin for a minute or two while SQUINTING (or otherwise shielding your eyes so as not to lose their dark adaptation), then turn off the light and enjoy it for a minute or so. But I have to respond to all the people who severely downgraded the coin because it wasn't as amazing as the promotional photo. There are only two ways I know of to make something glow in the dark: (1) Radioactivity. Glowing dials on clocks and watches used to be made of radium (!), before people realized how dangerous that was. For several decades afterwards, tritium was used, a hydrogen isotope with a half-life of 12 years, which meant that it eventually faded out anyhow - irreversibly; but concern about even these very low levels of radiation seeped into the public consciousness (based on poor science), laws were passed, and that was that. (2) Bioluminescence. This is what allows fireflies and other creatures to glow in the dark without heating up or running out of energy. Applying bioluminescence to commercial products is not yet a reality, but it's one of the holy grails of product design; and when someone DOES develop a way to make glow-in-the-dark consumer objects, I have no doubt that the Royal Canadian Mint will be the first one to use it in coins. So as I said in the headline, don't ask the impossible. The RCM blows our U. S. Mint out of the water. Take the win.

Glows in dark showing North America lit up at night. Stunning artwork! One of my favourites.

It is a dud. Please tell us how to see the "night" view.

This coin shows the "lights at night" view of Canada by night and the "map" by day... I saw it demonstrated in Ottawa. But mine shows day and then the map glows a bit. Can't see the night view. Also nicely demonstrated on the website. I've tried many tricks including black light plus magnifier (almost...). I fell my gift was a dud. Most folks seem to think the colored map just glows a bit and don't even realize the beauty of "night lights" database. Such a great coin should come with instructions and an accurate description. P.S. The night view is not "space" or "stars".

not up to expectations

Because we have met Roberta Bondar and as she grew up here in the Sault, I was interested in the coin. While it is indeed beautiful, I felt it did not live up to the promise of "illumination" as illustrated in the catalogue. Though I am not a coin collector and therefore have no idea of the value of coins, I feel the price was very high. At a lower price I may have kept it but at this price it was way more than I wanted to spend on a "Memento".

Not all it was claimed to be.

Very disappointed with the much vaunted glow in dark features. You need to work on improving this if that line is going to be continued.

Will barely glow in the dark. Have left it in direct sunlight and under lamps for hours, and it will not glow anywhere near the extent the website depicts.

Glow in the Dark - View from Space

Nice coin once it finally got enough light to glow in the dark. Along with some other mentions it works well with a black light as well. Enjoy how it is on a convex coin, a double feature coin.

How do you get this coin to glow?

Darkodave

Hello. The coin will glow at any time however if placed under a light for 30 seconds or so, it will have a much brighter glow.

Matt (Product Team)

The mini black light is a way to see glow in the dark products. On mine, the "day" view did glow but didn't achieve that "lights at night" view, but the one a shown to me at the Ottawa mint store did.... it glowed bright as a night view of the lights without the map colors. I've tried many ways to achieve the same view but can't. I even took it up to Vancouver to the mint store to try to get them to show me. So, a black light plus a magnifier almost does it.

Mrs DDO

I received my coin from the mint. However I can see the coin has a slight dent with a hairline almost scratch like imperfection. Does this decrease the value?

NoviceCollector

Chad

I purchased a coin and it doesn't seem to glow in the dark

Brenda

Sometimes it helps if you place the coin under a light for a minute, than try it in the dark again.

Matt (Product Team)

I use the Mini Black light and the night time scene really shows up nicely

Digupcoins

I agree my coin does not glow in the dark even when left by a light for hours .
