As the world turns its attention to Brazil for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, our famous loonie is at it again, sporting a special design to express pride in Canada's athletes and to cheer them on.

It all began during the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic Winter Games when a loonie was embedded under the ice. That year, Canada's men's and women's hockey teams both went on to win gold, and the Lucky Loonie legend was born, bringing its special magic to Olympic ice ever since. In 2004, the Mint began issuing Lucky Loonie coins to celebrate Canada at every summer and winter Games. This year, the 2016 Lucky Loonie features a new look and design element—it's engraved with the words LUCKY LOONIE / DOLLAR PORTE-BONHEUR, its popular moniker.

Celebrate Canada's Olympic and Paralympic Teams, and express your own pride with this very special 99.99% pure silver coin with the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Team logos proudly displayed in colour.

About the Design:

Designed by Canadian artist Derek Wicks, your coin has created an energizing design of a common loon on the water, its arched body and outstretched wings poised for take-off. It's a symbolic salute to Canada's Olympic and Paralympic athletes as they soar to new heights at 2016.

Canada's pride is further expressed through the stylized maple leaf in the background, while the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Team logos and LUCKY LOONIE / DOLLAR PORTE-BONHEUR line the bottom edge of the coin.

Packaging:

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with black beauty box.

It's small and expensive. You would be much better to get the silver 1/2 ounce maple leaf coin that looks like the penny. Much better value for your money.

Unique Gift.

This was a gift and took 6 weeks for the order to arrive. This happened last year when I ordered something on Nov 8 and it was delivered Dec 18, and they were Christmas gifts that needed to be reshipped. Before that, most of my orders were received shortly after order so not sure why there are now such big delays.

The coin was to be a birthday gift BUT shipping and delivery were not acceptable. It was ordered on 30 June 2016 and it was not delivered until 25 Oct 2016. As a result I was not able to give the coin as a gift.

How much is the frame for this product?

The Tonester

Hi Tonester, We have several frames to chose from ranging from $11.95 to $27.95, but one of the smaller ones will suffice. Here's the page to view them all; http://www.mint.ca/store/search/searchResults.jsp?_dyncharset=UTF-8&i_search=frame&_D%3Ai_search=+&sort=relevance&_D%3Asort=+&go=true&_D%3Ago=+&_DARGS=%2Fstore%2Fcommon%2Fheader_flash.jsp.formSearch

Why can't an American,me,buy this?

Long time master club member

The contract we have with the Canadian Olympic Committee and the Canadian Paralympic Committee (whose logos we feature on the coin) restricts us from selling the coin outside Canada.

as nuts as it sounds is the loon taking off or landing. just wondering.

Barry

The design is of a common loon on the water with its arched body and outstretched wings poised for take-off.

Would this coin fit into the Pendant Necklace?

Trish

No. The pendant carries a coin 27 mm in diameter; the Lucky Loonie coin that is 26.5 mm in diameter may wiggle and move in the pendant.

Yudi (Product Team)

I would think that the coin in the display case is held between two panes of material. Are these sheets archive quality?

jim

'Archival' quality is a highly subjective term. The floating frame's transparent, flexible silicone membranes will not cause the quality of the coin to deteriorate, as long as the coin is kept inside its own capsule.

Yudi (Product Team)

Does it come with a case for a present Regards Otilio

Otilio

Yes this coin comes in our standard clam shell case: http://www.mint.ca/store/dyn/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/152093_pkg-1198.png The frame pictured can be purchased separately: http://www.mint.ca/store/coins/floating-frame-coin-accessory-br-80-mm-x-80-mm-x-34-mm-prod2680013

What is the difference between proof silver, fine silver and pure silver? and and such the value differences?

Rosie

Hi Rosie, pure silver and fine silver refer ro the silver content in the coin. Our silver coins typically contain 99.99% pure silver. Proof refers to the finish of the coin. You can learn about our finishes at this link: http://www.mint.ca/store/product/rcmcoins.jsp?campaignName=BuyersGuide2015&pId=3300020#05-finishes

you say 25.00 for 25.00 but the mint and banks won't cash. what value are they

jim

Hi jim - please see this FAQ on redeeming collector coins: http://www.mint.ca/store/mint/customer-service/faq-1100010#Q1a

Does the coin come together with the transparent floating coin display case (with a thick black border) as pictured?

Benjammin

No, sorry, it does not.

Does this coin fit in the bazel/necklace?

Sasha

Thanks for your interest in the Royal Canadian Mint coins. We have tested in our Boutique the Lucky Loonie coin in the smallest bezel (27mm) and it fits/stays in place but will be turning in the bezel. Thanks for wearing your Lucky Loonie, it makes us proud.
