Your pure silver coin salutes Canada's paramedics—those who rush to save people in medical distress. Whether they're called to an accident, illness or the scene of a violent crime, these frontline responders must be quick thinking and decisive, often with a hefty dose of courage. The design of two paramedics unloading a patient from their ambulance is a powerful tribute to the critical role they play in saving lives.

About the Design:

Designed by Canadian artist Ken Ryan, your coin uses selective colour over detailed engraving in this snapshot of paramedics in action. Engraved in the background is a rear view of an ambulance, its doors open wide just moments after arriving at a hospital's ambulance bay. In the foreground, vibrant colour highlights the paramedics in their dark uniforms, complete with bright yellow and silver reflective bands just below the knees. Their faces are intent and convey the pressing nature of their important role; they are quick to unload the yellow-coloured stretcher from the ambulance before rushing toward the building, which will allow the patient to receive the continuum of medical care she desperately needs.

Did you know…
  • The 1970s and 1980s saw a marked shift in paramedic practice, with the focus moving away from transporting patients towards providing pre-hospital medical care.
  • In 1946, the first civilian air medical transport program in North America was established in Saskatchewan.
  • In remote areas, air ambulance crews frequently provide medical care to those who are critically ill or injured.

Are they all Caucasian?

Thank you for your question. Not all of the designs are Caucasian. Going forward, we will committed to better representing Canada's diversity on our coins.

Why didn't this coin truly represent what paramedics do? Such as administering a life saving drug, or performing a medical procedure. This looks like a bunch of stretcher jockies from 1975. Where's the cardiac monitor on the stretcher, or even a paramedic wearing a stethoscope? Ontario paramedics are highly trained individuals which this coin doesn't reflect unfortunately.

Thank you for your Question. The Mint consulted the Paramedic Association of Canada (PAC), who helped us arrive at a mutually acceptable design. To generally represent Canadian paramedics, we showed them working from an ambulance on the recommendation of the PAC and also depicted both a male and female to have an inclusive illustration of the men and women who serve in this important field.

ONTARIO PARAMEDICS ARE NOT THE ONLY PARAMEDICS IN CANADA. WE ARE ALL HIGHLY TRAINED WITHIN OUR RESPECTIVE SERVICES. SO THE DEPICTION OF TWO PARAMEDICS, ONE FEMALE AND THE OTHER MALE, WORKING TOGETHER WITH A PATIENT ON THE STRETCHER IS QUITE A NORMAL SITUATION.

Wow. This is why I left Ontario to practice and teach Paramedicine elsewhere. The "all for us" toxic atmosphere seems to permeate in many (not all) parts of the province. I have received this coin as a gift from my family for my 20 years of service anniversary and I am proud to have received it.

Get over yourself "Marsh the Ontario Medic." I am a Paramedic and whole heartedly believe in and support my brothers and sisters from B.C. to Newfoundland. This coin is wonderful and truly does represent us. Work awhile and you'll figure it out. Thank you Canada Mint for producing these!

Where did the image come from? Who are the medics?

The man and woman pictured on this coin are composites of various sources of inspiration and they generally represent their service rather than specific individuals.
