Pure Silver Proof Set – 150th Anniversary of the Transatlantic Cable (2016)

Mintage: 20,000
Canada and US only

Amongst our best sellers since 1937! Every coin is struck in fine silver (99.99% pure)!

Today, the world is at our fingertips, with every corner of the globe merely a click away. But there was a time when news could travel only as fast as the person, horse or ship that was carrying it, and it took weeks, months or even years to be relayed.

This all changed 150 years ago when a transatlantic cable was laid across the ocean to connect Valentia Island, Ireland, with Heart’s Content in Newfoundland. The ambitious plan was inspired by a submerged cable that had begun transmitting telegraph messages across the English Channel in the early 1850s, and this prompted industry to set its sights on the great divide of the Atlantic Ocean.

After numerous attempts starting in 1857, success finally came on July 27, 1866, when the massive steamship, the S.S. Great Eastern, arrived in Newfoundland’s Trinity Bay where the historic cable was pulled to shore at Heart’s Content.

Suddenly, breaking news could be transmitted in a fraction of the two-week timeframe it took ships to cross the sea. It was an achievement that fundamentally changed the way the people perceived the world, and ultimately paved the way toward the global communications of the 21st century.

About the Design:
Designed by Canadian marine artist Yves Bérubé, your proof silver dollar coin features a starboard side view of S.S. Great Eastern as the iron steamship triumphantly rests in the harbour of Heart’s Content, Newfoundland. Painstakingly engraved in exceptional detail, the Great Eastern easily dwarfs a local gaff-rigged fishing boat (known as a Jack Boat) off her bow, while her four funnels and six masts rise up to fill the upper portion of the reverse. In the background, the picturesque fishing village and the rolling hills that surround Trinity Bay are a welcome sight, signalling the end of one journey for the crew after spending weeks laying the transatlantic cable along the North Atlantic seabed. This historic cable linking Heart’s Content to Valentia Island, Ireland, is illustrated on the map element that fills reverse’s lower portion. Fittingly, the cable itself is represented on the map.

About the Package:
Your set will include a numbered certificate with detailed coin specifications—your proof of ownership for this low mintage premium Proof Set and evidence that each coin has been individually inspected by our resident quality assurance specialists

Your fine silver proof set comes in an elegant genuine leather book-style packaging that complements your beautiful coins.

Comments about Pure Silver Proof Set – 150th Anniversary of the Transatlantic Cable (2016):

I buy the proof set every year. The set is beautiful as in every year. I am puzzled though why the mint opts to now produce two different proof sets. I purchased this one because all coins are silver as opposed to the other proof set where only the dollar is silver.

Comments about Pure Silver Proof Set – 150th Anniversary of the Transatlantic Cable (2016):

I have to say that I was a bit hesitant when purchasing this proof set mainly because of the price. My curiosity overshadowed my thin budget so I went ahead and decided why not. I knew if I wasn't completely satisfied I could return it so that gave me another reason to say okay. When I received this set all doubts were off the table. You know that good feeling you get from the rush of adrenaline and you can't help cracking a smile? That's what happened to me. I was awed by the precision of engraving the fine details on this set. It is second to none. The craftsmanship of the holder that houses this set is to be admired. This is one of those items that could be considered a family heirloom. This set will only rise in value given it's all silver and an anniversary production. Folks, if you store and take special care of this proof set it will retain it's beautiful finish and be a future investment. Oh, by the way, I still get that adrenaline feel good feeling every time I look at this set.

Thank you for the answer about whether the dies used to strike the coins in the pure silver proof set are later used to strike circulation coins. Now I understand that the dies are dedicated to striking proofs.

I have a follow up question - is the same master punch used to make the dies for proof and circulation coins? What I'm getting at is whether the orignal artwork is the same for both, although of course it would be reproduced more precisely on the proofs.

                        A:

The same master punch is used for numismatic and circulation on occasion, but not every time. There are differences in the way each metal flows in striking, and so the decision is made based on the specific design and striking requirements for each design and blank. The original two-dimensional artwork would be identical for both circulation and numismatic coins.

The 25, 10, and 5 cent coins include a mint mark (the M with a leaf). The P found on the obverse of the $1 coin indicates that the coin has been plated (it is a silver coin fully plated gold).
