Halifax, Nova Scotia, July 13, 2007 – The deck of the Canadian-built Brigantine Playfair was the scene of a special event today as the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) presented a 2007 Tall Ships Collection - Brigantine Fine Silver Coin to Rhys Weed, Captain of the two-masted sailing vessel. The Playfair is currently docked in Dartmouth, as part of the flotilla on display during the Halifax leg of the 2007 Tall Ships Nova Scotia Festival.
"Tall ships have been an essential part of the discovery and development of Canada and a wonderful theme to celebrate on a collector coin," said Ian E. Bennett, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. "We're especially delighted that the Royal Canadian Mint could showcase its newest Tall Ships coin aboard a genuine Brigantine at the Tall Ships Nova Scotia Festival."
This 2007 fine silver coin is the third in a series of RCM Tall Ships Collection coins celebrating Canada's maritime heritage. Designed by Musquodoboit Harbour artist Bonnie Ross, the coin depicts two elegantly engraved Brigantines sailing in Halifax Harbour before Purdy's Wharf, illustrated in a vibrant hologram. This 99.99% pure silver coin retails for a suggested $ 74.95 CAD and is limited to a mintage of only 16,000.
