The wood duck's Latin name, Aix sponsa, means "bird in wedding raiment." This stunning and colourful duck is well suited to its flattering Latin nomenclature: in fact, some bird experts consider it the most beautiful waterfowl in North America. Found throughout southern Canada in the warm summer months, this unique midsized bird is one of only a few North American duck species to nest in tree cavities.

Designed by Canadian artist Trevor Tennant, your full-colour coin features a Wood Duck breeding pair swimming in a pond at the onset of fall migration. Every detail of the male's unique colour pattern is majestically captured, his image beautifully reflected in the water. Beside him swims his female partner with her predominantly brown and white body, indigo and aubergine wing feathers and distinctive white eye markings. In the background is a dense group of green lily pads dotted with soft yellow water lilies. The reverse is engraved with the word "CANADA," the date "2013" and the face value of "10 DOLLARS."
Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell case lined with flock and protected by a black sleeve.
