The kaleidoscope has entertained people for 200 years. Originally a design tool, it quickly became a favourite toy thanks to the beautiful patterns formed by tumbling bits of glass inside its mirrored tube. Even today, nobody can resist giving a kaleidoscope a twist and then looking inside to admire the design they've created.

This breakthrough new series explores the incredible designs that can be achieved when great Canadian icons become the focus of the kaleidoscope's reflective magic—starting with the polar bear!

About the first coin design:

Canadian artist Calder Moore has created a full-sized kaleidoscope design for the coin's extra-large surface. Countless polar bears come together in a complex pattern of amazing beauty, some face-to-face to create the outer ring of the design, while smaller bears stand back-to-back to form the rings in the centre. At the extreme edge of the coin, the image of the polar bears become more obvious while individual design features endless shapes. The design is meticulously crafted with astounding detail, and beautifully enhanced with myriad shades of translucent blue to capture the reflective essence of a kaleidoscope.

Packaging:

Your coins are encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded box that stores each of your three coins in separate drawers and includes space for your kaleidoscope and coin certificates.

Love the coins but not the toy.

I love the size and colors of these coins. Too bad that the Kaleidoscope is just a cheap cardboard toy that cannot be used with the coins. Need to be more careful in the future. I would recommend the three coins but not cardboard toy and box.

Very Disappointed

I know how a kaleidoscope works. I know silver cones are not translucent. I thought this was going to be something cool to put the coin in to view/enhance the image. I didn't expect a cheap cardboard toy I'll never look at again and has no application involving the actual coins. Very disappointed.

I don't know what I was expecting.

I love the coins. They are a beautiful representation of what a kaleidoscope would show. Also love that they are Canadian animals and a maple leaf depicted. However as my tittle says I did not know what I expected. I was thinking that these coins would be viewed through a kaleidoscope and could be contorted . When I finally had the shipment of my second delay on the box and kaleidoscope (this time without a email warning or any at that) I found that it's just a toy. Close to what I could buy at a dollar store. I would have loved a better quality toy since it does not really go with my coins but is an interesting addition to my collection. Don't get me wrong by this review. I love my purchase and will have it on display (out of reach from children) and will treasure it. I was only disappointed in the kaleidoscope and that only. The display box and coins are amazing.

Horrible communication... follow up review

So clearly the Mint has issues with its "overseas" cardboard box and Kaleidoscope manufacturer. If I'm buying from the Royal Canadian Mint why aren't you using Canadian Manufacturer's? It would go nicely with the Canada150 theme! The printed catalogue and online content originally stated the first coin would come with a box and a kaleidoscope. First coin arrived, no box or kaleidoscope. So I asked online and received this response: Hi Kam, The Royal Canadian Mint-branded box that stores the three coins in separate drawers and includes space for your kaleidoscope and coin certificates is sent with the second coin. This is mentioned on the product page. Answered on 11/8/2016 by Chad from Ottawa "This is mentioned on the product page." Now wait a mintute, instead of apologizing for the delay, you're referring me to an edited products page changed to say its now coming with the second coin How RUDE! Guess what I received today?! My second coin and yes you've guessed it...so now what's the excuse?! RCM Management need to apologize! Can't wait to see what this cardboard box made "overseas" is going to look like?

Nice, but flawed

I like this coin but I don't like it enough to keep it. It is not a coin that makes me want to open the box every once in awhile to admire it. The design is attractive (though a bit "busy") but the metallic colours end up being a little muted unless viewed in the right light. And my particular example (I think) has I flaw. It is not symmetrical. Viewed at a certain angle, it appears there should be eight lines radiating from the centre of the coin to it's edge. The coin I received only has six. I also wish the edge of the coin was finished is some way. What I do like about the coin is it's size. In fact, I found myself flipping the coin over just to admire the reverse side where the standard reverse image of the queen jumps out at you on a coin this size. It really feels like I am holding a quality coin whereas when I view the front side it feels like I am holding a medallion. I would love to see the mint produce more coins of this size and weight. They make you feel like you've gotten a lot for your money, they're great at displaying the art and are less expensive than the 2 ounce coins.

Concept & Design

I believe that the design could have been better executed if the color used is bolder (red, dark blue). I like the fact that it's thinner and thus it's bigger in circumference. What i didn't like is that I felt deceived that kaleidoscope is coming with the second coin and that IT IS A TOY! This is for me a false advertising and I feel that deceived.

Spectacular

Truly unique coin 60 millimeter one ounce silver coin what I really like about it is how there's no writing on the kaleidoscope. I am truly looking forward to the other two coins in the series I know I'm going to like them very much. Like you only have one question and I really wish this could happen sometime in the future if you make a red one red version of these coins that would be just fantastic just a thought happy customers are you doing a great job

Cool Idea, Kaleidocscope is Useless...

The coin is really cool, like the size of it. Maybe try and put some of your other designs on coins this large. Kinda seems pointless to include the kaleidascope when it doesnt even work with the coins. Just dont see the added value of including with the coins.

Poor Customer Service

No gift box or Kaleidoscope with the first coin as expected and stated in the description. No note to say that the items would be on the way soon. Not a word. Very poor customer service and description. Also the answer to the question as to when the gift box and kaleidoscope ships. It says with first coin!

Subscribed but no kaleidoscope with my 1st coin?

4

"Receive a free kaleidoscope with your first coin in the subscription! Subscribe today!" Not true... I didn't get a kaleidoscope. Maybe they forgot to include one? Or could have at least sent a note saying to follow or sorry out of stock? I sure don't feel like a Platinum member.

Just received my 2nd coin but no case and Kaleidoscope? Any update?

Bill

Hi Bill, We apologize for this. the case and kaleidoscope should have arrived with your second coin. Please call our customer service department (1-800-267-1871) and they will provide an update for you.

Chad

I see the first coin has the year 2016 stamped on it. The next two coins are sent in 2017 , will they have 2016 or 2017 stamped on them ? Thanks.

Mike

Hello, yes, the remaining 2 coins in 2017 will be dated 2017.

Matt (Product Team)

Before I subscribe I would like to be able to see all three coins. Is that possible?

Nancysty

Hello, based on our internal approval process, we are unable to show the remaining 2 coins at this time.

Matt (Product Team)

Does each coin in this subscription come with the usual protective plastic encasement?

Thomas

Hello. Yes, this coin is encapsulated as per our normal packing procedure.

Matt (Product Team)

I know you can't help everybody but isn't red a prime color I would think you should make red colored coin that is all it would be a good seller I'm sure

Superflyhapguy

Hi Superflyhapguy, Thanks for the suggestion. The second and third coins have not been released yet, which may contain some red. Check back often and sign up to receive emails from us so you can be notified when they're released.

Chad

Just wondering what the point of even including the kaleidoscope is if it doesnt work on the coins? Sorry I just dont see the point or value of it?

Derek

The designs are based on an image that a Kaleidoscope toy could display. We believe that including the Kaleidoscope, a toy that was popular many years ago, would be a nice touch to the overall product.

Matt (Product Team)

I received the first coin but no gift box with the kaleidoscope. Why is that and when will this be available?

Judy

Hi Judy, The kaleidoscope and box will ship with the second coin which will be released in February 2017.

Chad

I did not receive the storage box or the kaleidoscope with the first coin... is it back ordered or was there a change??

Tony

Hi Tony, The kaleidoscope and case will be shipped with the second coin, which will be released in February 2017.

Chad

I just received my 1st coin in the subscription order. I'm disappointed and feel misled, it clearly says "Receive a free kaleidoscope with your first coin in the subscription! Subscribe today!" I only received the coin bubble wrapped in a plastic sleeve with nothing else.

Kam

Hi Kam, The Royal Canadian Mint-branded box that stores the three coins in separate drawers and includes space for your kaleidoscope and coin certificates is now sent with the second coin instead of the first coin . We apologize for any inconvenience.

Chad

What are the box and kaleidoscope made of -- cardboard, plastic, metal, or some other material? Thank you.

Kane

Hello, the subscription box is made of cardboard paper and the Kaleidoscope is a combination of cardboard paper and plastic.
