The Royal Canadian Mint is hiring a Senior Editor who can thrive in a dynamic and inclusive environment.

Reporting to the Manager, Linguistic Services, the Senior Editor is a seasoned translation professional capable of producing publishable-quality texts in French, and occasionally in English. The incumbent will use solid interpersonal skills to maintain positive team dynamics, support the Senior Manager as required and be an enthusiastic problem-solver for the LSOL Section and its clients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Edit a variety of critical documents (e.g. safety data sheets, ministerial correspondence, etc.) or high-profile documents intended for publication.
  • Translate a wide variety of texts of medium to high complexity from English into French and, if required, help double-check product names and inscriptions on coins and artboards with razor-sharp accuracy.
  • Assist in creative writing solutions and localized, culturally-accurate French and English equivalents to support the Mint’s communication, marketing and sales documents, including numismatic certificates, packaging, Web materials, etc.
  • Provide linguistic advice and support in French and English to Mint staff and coach the Section’s team on language tips and on trends in the Canadian and global language industry;
  • Help with the in-house text and terminology management systems and provide terminology expertise.
  • Help promote bilingualism at the Mint and uphold the application of the Official Languages Act and its relevant regulations, including intercepting risks of non-compliance that could be detrimental to the Mint brand and the Mint’s reputation as a flagship federal institution.
  • Assist and support the Manager in various tasks and projects, including:
    • replacing the Manager when the latter is unavailable, including proactively informing the Division’s VP of any potential issue;
    • ensuring Lean use of resources (optimizing in-house translation vs. outsourcing depending on workload; reducing waste by coaching clients on best practices when preparing requests; etc.);
    • taking the lead in problem-solving and settling procedural and prioritization issues with internal clients in a courteous, professional and collaborative fashion;
    • actively cultivating a pleasant, fun and positive working environment and taking demonstrated steps to enhance team cohesion;
    • providing feedback to suppliers, including marketing agencies, and internal stakeholders on linguistic quality and optimal translation work processes.

Requirements

  • B.A. in Translation, or higher, specifically in the English-to-French combination. An M.A. degree in translation is welcome provided the candidate previously holds a B.A. in Translation in the English-to-French combination;
  • Minimum of seven (7) years experience in EN-FR translation, editing and proofreading.
  • Superlative writing skills in French and ability to edit French at publishable-quality level.
  • Ability to maintain excellent customer service and a positive attitude, both at personal and team levels, while working with tight deadlines and juggling conflicting priorities.
  • Ability to work outside normal working hours (7 a.m. to 5 p.m.) as deemed necessary.
  • Solid analytical skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Thorough and up-to-date knowledge of writing protocols localized for French and English Canada.
  • Strict ethical standards for confidentiality and ability to maintain Secret-level security clearance.
  • Knowledge of SDL MultiTrans/Flow text and terminology management systems is an asset.
  • Excellent writing skills in English considered as an asset.
  • Interest in the theory of translation, terminology and semantics and its application is an asset.
