In New York, they called him “The Captain” and “The Messiah.” The consummate leader during his time with the New York Rangers (1991-1997, 2000-2004), Mark Messier earned his reputation as an NHL powerhouse by combining strong leadership with speed, physicality and a play-making touch. In Messier’s first season with the Rangers, the Edmonton-born captain energized the team and guided it to the best record in the league, earning him the Hart Trophy for “player judged most valuable to his team.” But Number 11 topped it all in 1994 with an incredible playoff run: he scored a hat trick in a game he famously predicted the team would win, and the goal that dramatically ended the Rangers’ 54-year Stanley Cup® drought. Inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007, Mark Messier is one of six NHL stars featured in this rectangular tribute to some of the legendary Canadian captains of an Original Six team.

The Original Six™: New York Rangers

Dubbed the “Broadway Blueshirts,” the New York Rangers joined the league in 1926 and won their first Stanley Cup in their second season (1927-1928). Two more championships followed, one in 1933 and another in 1940. And while the Rangers returned to the Final in 1950, 1972 and 1979 (and again in 2014), their quest for a fourth Stanley Cup was unsuccessful until 1994, when team captain Mark Messier scored the deciding goal in an unforgettable seven-game series.

Did you know…
  • Mark Messier is the first and only captain to have led two different NHL teams to Stanley Cup victories. He was also the second NHL player to win the Hart Trophy and the Lester B. Pearson Award (the Ted Lindsay Award) with two different teams.
  • He was born and raised in Edmonton, Alta., and comes from a hockey-playing family: his father played in the Western Hockey League during the 1960s, and a few other family members played in the NHL—including a great-uncle who played for the 1933 Stanley Cup champions, the New York Rangers.
  • Between 1991 and 1997, the Rangers reached the playoffs five times and won the President’s Trophy twice.
  • In the 1994 Eastern Conference semi-final, the Rangers were on the brink of elimination when Messier publicly guaranteed a victory in Game Six. Messier went on to score a hat trick in the third period as the Rangers forced a Game Seven; they went on to win the series and eventually, the Stanley Cup.
  • After a 25-year career that spanned four decades, Messier retired 11 games shy of besting the record for most games played, but remains one of the top all-time scoring leaders. He is ranked third for regular-season points (1887) and assists (1193), and eighth for goals scored (694); he is also the second all-time playoff scoring leader, with 109 goals and 186 assists for a total of 295 points.
  • The Mark Messier Leadership Award was created in 2006 and is awarded annually to the “player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice during the regular season.” Fans and NHL personnel participate in the nomination process, but the three finalists and the winner are selected by Messier himself.
