About
the artist
Joe Average, R.C.A.
Bold lines, cheerful colours and cartoon-like forms are the defining characteristics of a Joe Average painting. The Vancouver-based artist and humanitarian began his artistic journey with an early interest in drawing and photography. This became a professional pursuit in 1984, after an HIV+ diagnosis inspired him to dedicate his life to his art. Since then, Joe Average has received countless accolades and awards for both his artistic and charity work. His stylized paintings have been reproduced on posters, city banners and even a Canadian postage stamp in 1996, when the image also represented the International Conference on AIDS.
