BILL REID (1920-1998)Bill Reid was an eminent Haida sculptor, carver, and master goldsmith, and one of Canada's greatest artists. Born in 1920 in Victoria, British Columbia, to a Scottish-German father and a mother who was a member of the Haida First Nation, Reid lived with a passion for the Haida art tradition, making it ultimately his creative subject-matter. Over the course of his life, Reid created more than 1,500 exceptional works. His powerful sculpture The Spirit of Haida Gwaii is considered his masterpiece which brought him international acclaim. THE COINThe Spirit of Haida Gwaii pure gold coin is the world's first 10-kg gold coin of 99.999% purity. It is the second-highest denomination coin ever produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, which produced a 100-kg gold bullion coin of 99.999% purity with a $1,000,000 face value in 2007. The coin's massive size (180 mm) is fittingly complemented by the image of Bill Reid's monumental sculpture featured on its reverse. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Susanna Blunt. SPECIAL FEATURES
