Celebrate the Canadian discovery with this beautiful stamp!

Celebrate the Canadian discovery! that helped unlock one of the Arctic’s greatest mysteries with this colourful memento honouring the Franklin Expedition.

In 2014, Parks Canada and its partners located the remains of HMS Erebus, one of two ships from Sir John Franklin’s ill-fated 1840’s journey in search of the Northwest Passage. Franklin’s voyage ended in tragedy when his ships became trapped in ice. The surviving sailors eventually died in a desperate southbound march.

On the left side of this colourful memento, a Canadian Coast Guard vessel searches for Franklin's lost ships. On the right, an underwater photo depicting the discovery of Erebus’ bell is overlaid on a map of the Arctic region where the ships were lost. Inset into this image is the international stamp from the series, which combines a sonar image of Erebus with a line drawing of the ship's main deck. On the bottom right corner of the stamp, next to the silhouette of a diver, is the cancellation site: Gjoa Haven, Nunavut, the closest community to the site where Erebus was found.

The title and the diagonal text across the stamp are written in English, French, and Inuktut, a tribute to the stories of Inuit eyewitnesses, passed down through oral accounts which helped pinpoint the historic discovery.

This distinctive collectible will appeal to boating and marine enthusiasts, history buffs and Canadiana collectors.

IT TOOK ME A WHILE TO REALISE THAT THE LEFT-HAND PORTION OF THE STAMP REPRESENTS THE UNDERWATER WRECK OF THE HMS EREBUS. A DESCIPTION OF THE STAMP MAY HAVE BEEN A GOOD IDEA. THE CANCELLATION DESIGN IS EXCELLENT

This piece is a great compliment to anyone who purchased the "Lost Ships in Canadian Waters" coins. The radar images of the ship are really neat and detailed.
