About the Design:
The reverse design features Canadian engraver Thomas Shingles’s Canadian Coat of Arms design. A lion holding a Union Jack flag on the left and a unicorn holding a flag bearing three French fleurs-de-lys on the right support a central shield divided into five sections bearing historical emblems of England, France, Scotland, and Ireland, as well as a sprig of three maple leaves. The shield is encircled with a ribbon representing the Order of Canada bearing the motto Desiderantes meliorem patriam, which means “desiring a better country.” The shield is surmounted by a royal helmet within a garland of maple leaves, upon which stands a crowned lion holding a maple leaf. St. Edward’s Crown, symbolizing Canada’s constitutional monarchy, rests above the lion, which symbolizes Canada’s sovereignty. The motto A Mari usque ad Mare (“from sea to sea”) appears in a ribbon below the shield, along with a “compartment” or garland composed of the floral emblems of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland. The Coat of Arms is gold-plated, as is the raised edge. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. Her Majesty’s portrait is gold-plated, along with the raised obverse edge.

Simply stunning, this 5 oz coin does not disappoint. Representing the scarcest of Canada's "circulation" coins, this 50-cent piece from the "Big Coin" series is worth grabbing if you could not or did not get the set in its entirety. It will hold its value. I was pleased I was able to acquire it. Even more beautiful in hand than pictured it is a striking representation of Canada's Coat of Arms.

Stunningly Impressive and Distinctive Coin

I am strictly a collector so my coins remain a part of my collection. I am repeatedly drawn to the quality of RCM coins and as someone with a long Maritime heritage, I particularly like coins that are iconic and obviously Canadian. Mothers isn't anything quite like the Arms of Canada that reflects all of these qualities, and doing it on an enlarged coin with the Crest and The Queen's profile highlighted in gold plate is irristible. I've had to be satisfied with the little, tiny 50 cent coin until now (the $300 dollar gold one out of reach), so this was a no brainer for me.

For several years I've had a very expensive/unique proof coin set from the Royal (UK) Mint that was hands down my show off piece. This coin replaces that. Truly Spectacular! I have collected 50-cent rolls and coins for years and never fully appreciated the coat of arms until I seen this beauty. The detailing is amazing and I can not put the thing down...WOW
