Polar Bear:
Canada's bi-metallic two-dollar coin, launched in 1996, features a polar bear, one of the world's largest terrestrial carnivores which can weigh up to 650 kilograms. It lives near the cold seas and frozen ice of Canada's far-north.

Common Loon:
Launched in 1987, the reverse of the one-dollar coin represents a common loon swimming against the rugged backdrop of the Canadian Shield. The loon's haunting calls are one the quintessential sound of the Canadian wilderness in summer.

Canada's Coat of Arms:
The Canadian Coat of Arms, proclaimed in 1921 and modified in 1996, reminds Canadians of our diverse heritage. It features images from France (the fleur-de-lis), England (the three royal lions and rose), Scotland (a lion and thistle) and Ireland (the Irish harp and shamrock).

Caribou:
An enduring symbol of the Canadian north, the majestically-antlered caribou has remained a Canadian icon since first appearing on the twenty-five-cent piece in 1936.

Bluenose:
In 1921, Atlantic Canadians built one of the finest racing and fishing vessels in Canadian history, the Bluenose. Known for its speed, and almost unbeatable in a race, the ship first appeared on the ten-cent piece in 1937.

Beaver:
The beaver is Canada's national animal. Highly sought after for its rich fur in the 17th and
18th centuries, it was the mainstay of the colonial economy for centuries. Today, the beaver is revered as a symbol of hard work and perseverance.

            First time dissatisfied
Had I had known that the set of actual coins were just encased in a glorified Saran Wrap instead of an ACTUAL PLASTIC
I would Not have ordered the 2015 & 2016 uncirculated set
            My honest opinion
It looks like very cheap and takes away from the set
I felt I was purchasing something off of someone who is not a legitimate and NOT purchasing directly from Royal Canadian Mint

Curious as I am new at this. Okay the coins are uncirculated, and other than the 50 cent piece, available at any check out counter. Lets be real, they're not encapsulated, packaging is woefully fragile, so how can you ask over 5 times their monetary value.
I'm having a problem understanding this, can you help me out ?

                        A:

Hi pj - this is common question amongst new collectors. You are correct, in that this set is exactly like regular circulation coins. Although our collector coins are non-circulating, assigning them a face value is part of what makes them official legal tender.

However, the key difference between this set and circulation coins is that these coins have never been in circulation; these uncirculated coins have been carefully selected to provide you with the best examples of their kind.

For this reason these sets often sell-out as collector seek out pristine coins. These sets are also of greater than their face value because they have a limited mintage (maximum number of sets made). These coins truly are "mint" condition.

We do have a series of face value collector coins available on our website – these particular coins are available for straight exchange ($200 for $200, or $20 for $20 with free shipping). You can find a selection of these coins here: http://www.mint.ca/store/buy/20-for-20_coins-cat610001

Why is there tax on this item? I have never paid tax when I have purchased "money" from the mint before, it made me cancel my order for a much desired gift.

                        A:

Thank you for your question. Some information on our FAQ page explains why the Uncirculated Set (2015) has all applicable taxes applied to its price: http://www.mint.ca/store/mint/customer-service/faq-1100010#shopping6. Please refer to the section titled "How will the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) affect my purchase?".
