As spring returns to the Canadian landscape, the grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) emerges from its winter den to seek out food. For many, spring isalso a time for finding a mate; during the ensuingmating season from late May to July, the male grizzly bear seeks out any scent trail that leads him toa receptive female. Barring competition from othermales, this new couple will spend some time grazing and walking together, even cuddling and nuzzling one another, as courting leads to mating before the male returns to its solitary life. It is a timeless, ritualised process that is essential to the species' survival, and creates touching moments suchas the one depicted on this fine silver coin's reverse.
