Battle of Britain
The first coin in your subscription pays tribute to Canada's role in the Battle of Britain with its depiction of a dogfight in the skies above Dover. At the helm of a Hawker Hurricane, a Canadian fighter pilot ascends higher after firing upon a Dornier Do 17Z—the enemy plane has seemingly dropped in altitude as a trail of dark smoke billows up from one of its engines. Well below these fighter planes, the background recreates England's beautiful southeastern coast, where the waters of the English Channel meet the famous White Cliffs of Dover.
70th Anniversary of the End ofthe Italian Campaign
The second coin in your subscription recreates the sense of danger and the fierce fighting that awaited Canadian soldiers in the narrow streets of Italian towns such as Ortona during the winter of 1943. In the background, the crumbling remnants of stone buildings are indicative of the sheer destruction caused by combat that was often fought in close quarters. In the centre, a Canadian Sherman tank rumbles through the rubble-filled streets, causing dustto fill the air behind it. The tank is flanked by two Canadian soldiers who, despite the risk of sniper fire and landmines, bravely move along the streets as they clear the town and search for survivors.
Canada's Merchant Navy in the Battleof the Atlantic
The third coin in your subscription depicts the dangerous conditions endured by transatlantic ships during the Battle of the Atlantic between 1939 and 1945. It is a calm evening on July 11, 1943; in the foreground, the ocean steamer SS Duchess of York (left) is featured prominently, with a thick plume of steam billowing out from its funnels. Requisitioned as a troopship during the war,the large vessel is part of the convoy dubbed "Faith" which has been spotted by enemy aircraft off the coast of Spain. Two Focke-Wulf Fw-200 Kondors have begun their high-level bombardment, with one bomb hitting the water starboard side off the ship's bow, where detailed engraving adds movement through the motion of the water's surface. One of the convoy's escort ships, the Tribal-class destroyer HMCS Iroquois (right), has unleashed anti-aircraft fire but it is all in vain against this airborne attack. While SS Duchess of York and 34 of its crew would be added to the Allied casualties sufferedduring the Second World War's Battle of the Atlantic, 628 of its survivors would be rescued and transported to safety by Iroquois.
