The ambitious plan was inspired by a submerged cable that had begun transmitting telegraph messages across the English Channel in the early 1850s, and this prompted industry to set its sights on the great divide of the Atlantic Ocean.

After numerous attempts starting in 1857, success finally came on July 27, 1866, when the massive steamship, the S.S. Great Eastern, arrived in Newfoundland’s Trinity Bay where the historic cable was pulled to shore atHeart’s Content.

About the Design:
Designed by Canadian marine artist Yves Bérubé, your proof silver dollar coin features a starboard side view of S.S. Great Eastern as the iron steamship triumphantly rests in the harbour of Heart’s Content, Newfoundland. Painstakingly engraved in exceptional detail, the Great Eastern easilydwarfs a local gaff-rigged fishing boat (known as aJack Boat) off her bow, while her four funnels andsix masts rise up to fill the upper portion of thereverse. In the background, the picturesque fishing village and the rolling hills that surround Trinity Bay are a welcome sight, signalling the end of one journey for the crew after spending weeks laying the transatlantic cable along the North Atlantic seabed.
