Design:
Inspired by gardens across Canada, your coin design pays tribute to nature's beauty and the artistic endeavours of Canadian gardeners. At first glance, there's a prevailing sense of enchantment and mystery thanks to the filigree gate that stretches across the reverse. Fashioned from white bronze and inspired by an 18th century design, the filigree garden gate by Canadian artist Margaret Best has an intricate, almost delicate appearance that belies its resilience. The coin's large diameter (50 mm) allows a breathtaking mix of colour-over-engraved details behind the gate, as the eyes wander down the stone pathway leading to the cottage. Designed by Canadian artist Tony Bianco, this magical summer garden brings together some perennial garden favourites in Canada: a climbing rose, hydrangea, phlox, bee balm, salvia and rudbeckia. All are depicted in full bloom, which heightens the larger-than-life quality of this picture-perfect setting. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
Did you know…
- Our northern climate and varied geography can help or hinder any gardening efforts! Precipitation, wind, temperature, soil conditions and the number of frost-free days are some of the key factors to consider when planning or maintaining a Canadian garden.
- Knowing their plant hardiness zone can help gardeners select the right plants, shrubs and trees for their space. Canada is divided into 19 zones—0a being the harshest (the Arctic) and 9a being the mildest (parts of Lower Mainland BC). With climate change, many gardeners are revisiting their assumptions about local conditions and finding that they are now in a warmer plant hardiness zone!
- A cheery addition to our garden on the reverse, rudbeckia is more commonly known as black-eyed Susan. Native to North America, thisyellow perennial is remarkably resilient and will happily bloom in sunny locations!
- Hydrangeas can come in a range of soft colours, but some varieties (e.g. Hydrangeamacrophylla) may have different coloured blooms depending on the soil's pH level: blue if the soil is more acidic, pink for alkaline.
