Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Jamie Desrochers, your coin captures the celebratory spirit of a nation in 2017. Viewed from a unique perspective, the map of Canada has a distinctive dimensional feel to it as the viewer's eye sweeps across the nation. The focal point itself is the large "150" at thecentre; enhanced with vibrant red enamel and superimposed on the map, the "150" is as large as the nature of the celebrations commemorating the 150th anniversary of Confederation. Below it, the words "CANADA", "DOLLAR" and commemorative dates "1867-2017" are also engraved in Heritage Canada's official font for the occasion, alongside the CANADA 150 logo. Behind it allis Canada's national flag, rendered in laser frosting that gives it an ethereal feel—a fitting wayto convey the swelling sense of pride and patriotism that, though unseen, can be found within Canadian hearts during this momentous year. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
Did you know…
- Canada is home to more lakes than any other country in the world, and boasts the longest coastline (243,000 km). Nearly a third of the land is also covered by forest—a testament to our rich, natural legacy!
- The scientific name for the Northern Lights is the combined names of the Roman goddess of the dawn, Aurora, and the Greek North Wind, Boreas. Peak time for this dazzling light show is between late September and late March.
- Lester B. Pearson won a Nobel Peace Prize for his diplomatic efforts during the Suez Crisis, when he introduced the notion of a UN peacekeeping mission. He would go on to serve as Canada's prime minister from 1963 to 1968, and is also remembered for championing the adoption of a new national flag!
- Canada's transcontinental railway was completed in 1885. During the span of five years, workers laid down 4,600 kilometres of single track along the varied terrain, including bogs and mountains that presented enormous engineering challenges!
- Castor canadensis has a long history as a commodity during the fur tradeera, when the high demand for its pelt spurred early European exploration and the establishment of Canada's oldest commercial corporation. The beaver is also an important cultural icon for First Nationspeople—including the Huron, who honoured it long ago as the totem of their tribe.
