Design:
The reverse by artist Patrick Bélanger soars to great heights for a near eye-level view of the soldier that is carved at the centre of the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill, in Ottawa, Ont. The positioning of the figure helps convey the height of the actual sculpture. The soldier bears a sombre, reflective expression and stands in reverse arms pose—a common theme during the post-war period, and a fitting symbol of remembrance for Canada’s fallen soldiers. Gold plating selectively highlights the soldier’s lapel, buttons and gear, including therifle that is kept pointed down to the ground. To the right of the remembrance-themed sculpture is an ornamental flourish, whose floral motif is based on afrieze that adorns the Centre Block’s grand entrance. The reverse includes the face value, “100 DOLLARS”, and the words “CANADA 2018”. The obverse features amaple leaf background pattern and the effigy of HerMajesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
Did you know…
- Unlike the other sculptures featured in our Keepers of Parliament series, the Centre Block’s contemplative soldier was added during the Peace Tower’s construction, c. 1921. The figure was carved by Charles Adamson (1880-1959), himself a veteran of the First World War and later, a senior member of the team led bythe first Dominion Sculptor, Cléophas Soucy. Adamson is also associated with the Hopton Wood-carved focal point of the Memorial Chamber: the Altar of Sacrifice, the central altar upon which lies one of seven Books of Remembrance.
- The statue’s sculptor, Charles Adamson, also created three war memorials: one in Toronto, Wingham, and Kenora.
- Adamson is one of two post-war memorial sculptors in Canada who had fought in the trenches during the First World War.
