After exploring the South Pacific and crossing the Antarctic Circle in his first two voyages, Captain James Cook (1728-1779) turned his attention to the north for his third epic voyage, setting sail for thefabled Northwest Passage—a quest that brought his expedition to our western shores in 1778. Your gold-plated coin commemorates Cook’s historic arrival on the west coast of present-day Vancouver Island, near Yuquot, the summer home of the Mowachhat people. Rich in detail, your intricately engravedcoin depicts HMS Resolution from the viewpoint of the native people who greeted and traded with the two-ship expedition that left an indelible impact on Canada’s early history.

Design:
Designed by Neil Hamelin, your coin depicts Captain Cook’s expedition sailing into Nootka Sound at the end of March 1778. Viewed from the ocean-going canoe in the foreground, HMS Resolution is a towering sight on the water, as the Mowachaht beach keeper and his companions arepaddling out to greet the ship and its crew. Dressed in traditional clothing, the beach keeper standswith one arm raised while his right hand grips a paddle bearing a traditional motif. The reverse includes the engraved face value “30 DOLLARS” and the word “CANADA” and features a double date “1778-2018”. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
Did you know…
- During the Seven Years’ War, Cook produced a detailed map of the Saint Lawrence River. He also surveyed the coast of Newfoundland between 1762 and 1767.
 - George Vancouver served on HMS Discovery during Cook’s third voyage, and returned to Nootka Sound in 1792 while commanding his own expedition. During that voyage, he carefully mapped the coast of British Columbia, including the island that bears his name today.
 - International trade flourished at Nootka Sound after Cook’s expedition. Published accounts of his voyage brought Spanish naval vessels and British and American merchant ships to the region, to trade for sea otter pelts; a decade later, competing trade and territorial claims pushed Spain and Britain to the brink of war.
