- The first Christmas tree in North America is believed to have appeared in 1781, in Sorel, Québec, when Baroness Riedesel delighted dinner guests by having a balsam fir erected in the dining room, its branches adorned with fruits and white candles.
- Glass tree ornaments are believed to be a German invention, hailing from Lauscha in the Thuringian Forest, a glassblowing center dating back to 1597.
- The first glass tree ornaments began appearing in the 1840s and were originally made in the shape of fruits, nuts, heart- and star-shaped cookies, and other edible items traditionally used to decorate trees andfir boughs.
- Electric lights came into vogue at the turn of the century. In 1896, revellers in Westmount, Quebec, were among the first Canadians to admire an electrically lit tree. By 1900, large stores were using illuminated trees to attract customers.
