Did you know…
- Albertosaurus sarcophagus
This is the dinosaur that put Canada on the palaeontology map in1884—it was the first meat-eating dinosaur discovered here. - Pachyrhinosaurus Canadensis
A member of the Ceratopsidae (horned dinosaur) family, Pachyrhinosaurus canadensis lived 72.2 to 71.2 million years ago. Its genus name may give the impression it is relatedto the modern-day rhinoceros, but that’s not the case: it just means “thick-nosed lizard.” And given the evidence of broken ribs in some specimens, it seems likely that this herbivore would head-butt its rivals! - Edmontonia longiceps
This nodosaurid lived 71.5 to 71 million years ago and was named for the Edmonton Formation, now known as the Horseshoe Canyon Formation.
Designs:
Albertosaurus sarcophagus
The reverse image by Canadian artist Julius Csotonyi featuresa three-quarter view of Albertosaurus sarcophagus (72-68 Ma). Rushing towards the viewer, the tyrannosaurid is open-mouthed to allow a view of its sharp, serrated teeth. The engraved carnivore is bursting out of a prehistoric forest dominated by Metasequoia conifers and Osmunda-type ferns. Engraved along the rim are the words “CANADA”, the face value “25 CENTS”, the species name “ALBERTOSAURUS SARCOPHAGUS” and the year “2019”. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
