Did you know…
- Graduates dress in long gowns, known as full academic regalia. This enduring tradition initiated almost 700 years ago when universities were emerging in Europe. Since buildings were not heated, scholars kept warm by wearing long hooded gowns. Later, gowns became the official dress of academics to prevent excessive apparel. Buildings may now be warm year round, but the tradition lives on throughthe commencement ceremony. Gown colors vary by institution, but degrees are assigned standard tassel hues.
- Graduates tossing their caps in the air originated in 1912, during a Naval Academy ceremony. When students of the academy graduated, they were no longer commissioned to wear their caps. Throwing the capsin the air symbolized completion. Other institutions later adopted the gesture as a celebratory expression for graduates. This remained a tradition for graduation ceremonies.
- Before commencement and during the ceremony, the tassel isworn on the right side. Afterwards, it is flipped to the left.
