About
25 cents - Official First Day Poppy Coin (2004)
Originating as a symbol of remembrance in early 19th century Europe, the poppy became its international symbol when Canadian Lieut. Col. John McCrae penned his timeless poem “In Flanders Fields” during the First World War. To commemorate the men and women who have given their lives to secure our freedom, millions of scarlet poppies, as distributed by The Royal Canadian Legion, blossom on the lapels of Canadians each November. In honour of all those who have served our country, the Royal Canadian Mint is proud to issue the Official First Day Poppy Coin. This collector’s item is the world’s first coloured coin in circulation, featuring an innovative fluorescent security coating and a red poppy stamped in pressurized ink. Specially packaged in this limited edition cover, this 25-cent piece was minted on the first day of production, July 15, 2004.
