About
One-Ounce Platinum Coin – Steppe Bison (2009)
The size and power of the Plains bison has been emblazoned intothe North American psyche by Hollywood “westerns.” It’s difficult to believe that a larger, even more imposing beast once roamed this continent.
The steppe bison lived on the plains of Eastern Beringia, a large tract of land that emerges between Alaska and Northeast Siberia whenever an Ice Age locks much of the earth’s seawater in ice sheets on land. The steppe bisonhad large imposing horns with as much as a 1 metre (3 ft) spread between the tips on some males. This magnificent beast was hunted by cave lions, wolves and humans. Palaeontologists estimate it died out about 11,000 years ago.
Highlights: This coin is a rarity on so many levels. Its design provides a rare glimpseof a long-lost ice age animal; its uncommon composition of one ounce 99.95% pure platinum is rarely offered independent of a set; and its mintage of just 200 coins worldwide makes it a rare and very desirable numismatic treasure.
Reverse: The steppe bison with its imposing horns basedon images graciously provided by the Canadian Museumof Nature.
