Designed by Canadian artist Claudio D'Angelo, your coin features a detailed side profile view of a polar bear (Ursus maritimus) against the landscape of the Canadian Arctic. Moving across the snow-covered ice and rocks, a polar bear extends its elongated neck to vocalize, while its gaze remains fixed on what lies beyond the coin's rim. Advanced finishing techniques enhance the precision engraving that captures the polar bear's likeness in stunning detail, from the texture of its dense fur to its facial features. Its left forepaw is suspended in air, mid-step; meanwhile, the sea ice gives way to open water in the background, where tall glaciers and icebergs rise up along the horizon. The entire design gains an added sense of movement through the bear's distinctive paw prints, which are engraved on the coin's edge in a continuous pattern.

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a graphic beauty box.

I had read the reviews before buying and bought it as a gift for my sister. The coin itself is very nice and the paw prints are there but don't expect them to jump out at you. In fact, if you didn't know they were there, you wouldn't know they were there. When you discover them, it'll be an added bonus! Because they are SO small, the best way to see them is in good light at a slight angle. I have an area that looks as if there are no prints but they are there. I think it's because of how the side was polished as you will see in photos A and C. I have been buying coins from the mint for a few years now, and I have to say this is the first coin that was a bit disappointing. I am NOT disappointed in the coin as a whole and I'm very happy I bought it. I would have bought it regardless of the paw prints because of the interest my sister has with polar bears. I don't like recommending anything to anyone, but if you like polar bears, this is a beautifully done coin. I especially like the paw prints on the face of the coin. Buy for the beauty of the coin.....the paw prints are a nice surprise. My photos are untouched and were shot in macro to get as close as possible.

Minute Scratches and Shallow Edge Paws

1- There were 3 parallel small superficial scratches on the transparent plastic case on the bear side upon receipt; I was able to turn the coin by twisting movements/inertia so that the scratches were not obvious in the polar sky anymore. I should not have to do that if it is new. RCM QC sleeping? 2- I was also disappointed that the edge paws are shallower than what the website picture looked like: you really have to search for the paws and use light at an angle to see them well; it should not be like that, too subtle. They should definitely be deeper. Defect?

Shame on the edge

The production quality of the edge on this coin is uncommonly poor and not indicative of the standards I've come to expect from the RCM. Something went wrong on this one. Only twice in many years of collecting have I considered returning a coin; however, the edge quality is just that disappointing.

I would recommend this coin to anyone that is collecting.

Great Representation of a Polar Bear

Wonderful addition to the collection. I have the other two of the set and whoever did the engraving has certainly seen a polar bear In the wild before.

Very disappointed in quality and service

The polar bear with paw prints on the edge was well marketed with an image of paw prints on a beautifully polished edge. The quality on the edge detail was poor on half the coin and nonexistent on the other half. Returning by telephone was easy and the phone operator very conciliatory. I explained the problem and he assured me that it would be made right. When the second (replacement) coin arrived I couldn't believe that the quality was equally as bad if not worse. On top of the missing and poorly struck pawprints the edge was not polished. There were bad striations. For the second time I returned the coin and included a note with the coin, as well as detailing the problem to the return operator. The third coin arrived and it is a disappointment. Although i can see paws around the entire coin, again they are poorly struck with striations - that were shown as polished. I sitting here wondering if it is worth returning for a forth coin, only to be disappointed again. Polar bear paws have a special meaning for me and I was thrilled to be offered this coin. Unfortunately I am very disappointed in the quality and service. It seems that no one reviewed the reason for return or checked to she if the problem was resolved.

Stunning coin

Gave this as a gift to a friend and he absolutely loved it. It is extremely beautiful in person and I am considering getting one for myself after seeing it in person

Very disappointing

The pawprints on the edge are barely visible! Some portions of the circumference are smooth and have no pawprints at all! I called the Mint to say that I received a defective (?) one and they were less than helpful. Their exchange policy is a ridiculous hassle. You've been warned.

Disappointed consumer

Would purchase again

Great gift ideas

Nice addition.

The paw prints are a little hard to see. It would have been better if they were more defined. Overall though I like it and am happy to have it in my collection.

Is this coin still available? Thanks, Dianne

Hello and thank you for asking. This coin is still available and can be ordered online.

Which coin is the first one in this series? Is it the other polar bear coin with the glistening snow?

coin collector

Hi, The first coin in this series is the "1 oz. Pure Silver Coin - Nature's Impressions: Woodland Caribou - Mintage: 7,500 (2017)". Here's the link to the product page;

I see that the woodland Caribou was the first in the series. How many coins are included in the series and do you have some ideas of which animals will be depicted in future issues? Thanks

At the present time there is no announcement for future coins in the series, stay tuned.
