In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

 - In Flanders Fields, John McCrae (1872-1918)

From the tragedies of the First World War came a timeless poem: 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the poem In Flanders Fields, which was written by Canadian military doctor Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae amid the horrors of the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915. Through his hauntingly poignant poem, McCrae succeeded in giving a voice to the 60,000 Canadians who ultimately lost their lives in the First World War, and ignited an international effort to keep their legacy alive. To mark this anniversary, this striking coin is a solemn remembrance of the 600,000 Canadians who served their country from 1914 to 1918, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice—lest we forget.

About the Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Tony Bianco, your coin features beautifully detailed engraving that transports the viewer back to May 1915, back to the fields near Ypres. The author of the poem, Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, occupies the centre of the reverse's image field; identified as medical personnel by the cross shoulder patch on his uniform, McCrae is seated on a pile of rubble with pen and paper in hand. Surrounded by a sea of poppies blooming between the makeshift graves of fallen soldiers, McCrae begins to write In Flanders Fields, with the first paragraph of the poem in both English and French.

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded wooden case with graphic beauty box.

Nice Craftmanship

Originally I was debating between this coin and other one with the red background for about half the price of this one. There were two reasons at first I ended up with this selection, I loved the casing and also the fact there were only so few available. After getting it though, I came to realize its true beauty while the box is opened, the soldier in the middle of the coin stands out so much, it bring a whole new level of detailing to the eyes. No regret having bought this one.

Brilliantly crafted and unique with superb collector value!

Aside from its' historical significance and low mintage this coin is a stunner. I am an avid coin collector (typically modern numismatic and semi-numismatic silver coins and rounds)and literally look at several thousand different coins in a given year, but typically only purchase 3 to 5. The relief of the soldier really rises above the mirror finish, and then poppy field has a superb layered texture that can only really be appreciated with the coin in hand. (I would suggest to R.C.M. that they add a coin video to their website so that potential buyers can really appreciate this coin's beauty). Not only is the coin unique for it's historical significance (and personal significance to me since I grew up on McCrae St. named in the poet's honor), but also due to the fact that it is rare that the Royal Canadian mint puts out 10oz size coins. From my research I have only come across four designs in total (this being the 4th). There is a 1998 Bullion finish 10oz silver Maple Leaf design, but it has a whopping mintage of 13,000+. The other two 10oz 0.9999 silver coins have mintages of 2000 and 1500, so this coin is the rarest of the rare and likely has a worldwide rarity value in the high 90's for modern numismatic coins! The entire presentation and concept for this coin is a winner!

Beautiful coin, well worth it

We bought this coin because of the historical significance and low mintage and were pleasantly surprised by the beauty of it. The case, coin and packaging are incredibly well done. Beautiful keepsake definitely worth the cost.

It's a keeper!

This is a keeper! Don't miss it! Low mintage and it's a large 10oz coin with a great theme as Canada approaches the 150th birthday in 2017.
