BREATHTAKING! A legendary great white shark swims through stunning blue rhodium plating! Order today!

For years, the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) has been cast and portrayed as an object of fear—the classic “predator from beneath” that wreaks terror in countless movies. But look past its fearsome jaw and reputation, and you’ll find a fascinating ancient species that is among the oldest life forms on Earth! Famously associated with southerly coastlines, the great white enjoys a far wider range that also stretches north into the waters off Canada’s Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Infrequent captures and occasional sightings have earned it the distinction of being the second-largest fish found in Canadian waters; but its behaviour is not always well understood, and its highly mobile ways only add to its elusiveness. Myths and misconceptions surround this solitary predator, whose aggressiveness and size tend to overshadow its role in maintaining a balance within the marine environment.

Add this breathtaking 2 oz. pure silver great white shark coin to your collection! Order today!

Special features:
  • A FIRST! While we have used rhodium before on our coins (most notably, the gorgeous Nocturnal by Nature series), this is the first coin to feature blue rhodium!
  • A LEGENDARY SHARK! Your coin is a precision-engraved portrait of a legendary shark, and the second-largest fish found in Canadian waters!
  • SERIALIZED CERTIFICATE! Your coin includes a serialized certificate!
  • TWO OUNCES 99.99% PURE SILVER! Your 2 oz. coin’s larger diameter (50 mm) allows ample room to showcase the details in both the shark and its prey. In addition, your coin has no GST/HST!

Designed by Canadian artist Emily Damstra, your coin captures the imposing stature of a great white shark as it moves through Canadian waters. The viewpoint from beneath it emphasizes the large size and the streamlined shape of this solitary predator, whose conical snout is in full view. Its mouth is only slightly ajar, allowing a limited view of the famously serrated teeth that provoke such widespread fear. Rendered in outstanding detail by Royal Canadian Mint engravers, this highly detailed portrait includes the faint markings and scars along the torpedo-shaped body, the gills on its side, as well as the shark’s dark eye. Adding to a sense of depth and dynamic movement is the wide path cut by the shark as it catches up to a familiar prey: a school of Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus). The reverse also features the engraved word “CANADA”, the year “2018” and the face value “30 DOLLARS”. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Did you know…
  • Shark attacks are more rare than you think—in fact, it is said that you’re far more likely to be struck by lightning than fall prey to a shark attack! In 2014, only three shark-related casualties were reported worldwide; compare that with an estimated 100 million sharks killed by humans each year.
  • Sightings and even captures in Canadian waters are reported every two to three years. The world’s largest verified capture of a great white shark was a 6.1-metre long female caught near Prince Edward Island in 1988.
  • Surprisingly, the great white shark is not the largest fish or shark species found in Canadian waters! That honour goes to the gentle basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus), which can reach a maximum size of 15.2 metres and weigh 4 tonnes!
  • Only its underside is white, while the rest is a variation of grey and black. This allows the shark to blend in with its oceanic environment: when seen from above, it blends in with the ocean floor; when seen from below, it blends in with the sunlight.
  • It has excellent hearing and an extraordinary sense of smell.
  • A great white shark suffocates if it stops moving! Its own movement causes water to flow over its gills, which deliver oxygen to its blood stream.
  • This shark species is decidedly solitary and independent: from the moment it is born, a young shark (pup) swims away from the mother and fends for itself.
  • Because it constantly replaces lost teeth with new ones, the great white shark produces roughly 3,000 teeth throughout its lifetime! When it bites, the shark’s lower jaw juts forward while it pulls its head back, allowing the serrated teeth to stab the shark’s prey before the upper jaw comes down on it.
  • Sharks have a sixth sense: electromagnetism, which allows them to detect the electrical pulses emitted by muscle movements.

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a black beauty box.

Very disappointing

I was very disappointed for the quality of the coin. The coating was not applied evenly. Hard to believe this is a coin from the mint!

I would buy this coin again!

This coin is unique in that one might not expect to see a design of a Great White Shark on any of our Canadian coins!

Initial picture advertised much different then actual coin

Not impressed as more and more it appears the Mint is making more inferior coins and also flooding the market with too many new coin releases with similar themes!!

Very Interesting Coin

Coin was not as it was originally displayed. Blue colour was much lighter in the original website perspectives. However, the darker blue is very attractive and makes the smaller fish seem more 3D. Even though it was a different colour than originally illustrated it is still a magnificent coin. A great addition to my collection of "first of" coins. I suspect a quick sell out will occur on this one!

Not as expected - Misleading!

VERY disappointed with this coin. I was initially impressed with how quickly my coin shipped, fastest of the 100's I've bought from the mint.....Now I know why. The coin's backdrop is not the vibrant blue as shown in the picture which was my main reason for purchasing the coin. Instead it is very dark, too dark for my liking. I will be returning this coin.
