Planes were still a rare sight in the sky when the world was plunged into war in 1914. The “flying machines” seemed to have little use, but the ever-evolving tactics of war quickly propelled them from rickety canvas-over-wood reconnaissance planes to full-fledged aerial combat weapons that engaged in spectacular dogfights.

This exciting new coin series features three of the most successful Allied fighter planes of the First World War, beginning with the British-built Royal Aircraft Factory S.E. 5a. Introduced in 1917, this biplane was on the front lines of innovation. It could fly up to 222 km/h and remain airborne for more than two hours, two factors that enabled the Allies to regain and maintain air superiority until the war’s end in 1918.

Although Canada did not have its own air force, thousands of Canadians enlisted as aircrew personnel in the United Kingdom’s Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) or the Royal Flying Corps (RFC), with some of them undoubtedly taking to the air in Royal Aircraft Factory S.E. 5a planes.

First coin design, the Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a:
Designed by Canadian artist David A. Oram, the first coin in your subscription features a richly detailed, engraved depiction of an airfield where a squadron prepares for takeoff. A Crossley Light Tender 20/25 truck is parked behind five Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a aircraft, which have lined up in front of several Bessonneau hangars; the foremost plane is particularly striking thanks to the use of selective colour, which recreates the biplane fighter’s dark green colour, as well as the blue, white and red roundel and tail cockade that identified the aircraft of the Royal Flying Corps. Seated in the open cockpit, a Canadian pilot wears the leather flying coat, helmet and goggles that offer him some protection from the wind and cold temperatures at higher altitudes. The reverse boasts an impressive amount of detail in its rendition of the wire-braced box girder, and close examination offers a glimpse of the fuselage-mounted .303 Vickers gun and the MK-II Lewis machine gun on the upper wing, which helped make this aircraft one of the most successful Allied fighter planes of the First World War.

"All Quiet on the Western Front"...

Not only has this WWI aeroplane series been tastefully completed but so has the rest of your commenratives to "The Great War"... Having known a former Ace who flew a S.E. 5a (2 blimps / 1 Fokker) for the US Army Air Corp near the end of the war, that coin & this series would have impressed him & those "who flew motorized kites and when lifting off, had no idea if they would ever be back..." Your "In Flanders Fields" work is excellent as well (I have two...) and DO suggest you revisit the Vimy Ridge commenrative nickel to be updated to something more appropriate (1,5,10 oz but Definitely High Relief...) for what is probably one of the most poignant war memorials in the world, Least we forget...

Great detail of entire scene

This set is quite different from many of the other themes, and the coloring is fantastic. Detail is amazing. I sat and scanned the first coin and I couldn't believe the incredible engraving that was employed in the manufacture. The Canadian mint does have such diversity compared to many other mints. One of my favorite sets. Only disappointment was that it was originally advertised with a painted tin and didn't arrive that way. The plain tin is nice though and I might paint it myself.

Aircraft depiction is very well done

The coins display well with the replica models I collect . I am a particular lover of this era of flight .

2 Coins In and Loving Them!!

I really enjoy this set, everything is just great. The coins are so finely detailed, as well as being bright due to the colours used. The collectors case is pretty nice, however i do agree with some of the others that the case could have been labeled instead of using the plastic sleeve. All in all still a great set to own, looking forward to receiving the 3rd and final coin to complete the set.

Very Handsome Collection

These are large highly detailed coins. The case is fantastic! The quality is everything you would expect from the RCM! The coins are colourful and represent the first aircraft Canadian pilots trained in for World War I. They represent an integral part of the history of Canada as it established its identity as an independent nation during the First World War! Highly recommended!

Collector Case

Amazing set however was a little disappointed when I received my second coin and the collector case that the lid wasn't embossed like the picture showed rather it has a cheap plastic printed sleeve which has to be removed to open each time so wont display as nice in my mind as it could have

Coin 1: Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a (priced at $99.95) Coin 2: Sopwith Triplane (priced at $99.95) Coin 3: Curtiss H-12 (priced at $99.95

Hey can't I find a picture of the triplane in this subscription set. Can't seem to find a pic of it? Is it still actually included in the set? Have to see a pic of it first.

Hi Cossa, Here the link to the Sopwith Triplane product page. Note: we're not selling this coin individually;

I just ordered the first coin but see that all three have been released. As I hit the subscription button will I receive all three together and be charged accordingy?

Hi Eileen, The default delivery schedule is one coin every month or so. If you'd like to receive all three coins and the case at the same time please call our Customer Service Department (1-800-267-1871) and they'll adjust the delivery schedule so you get everything in one shipment.

$99.95 is for 1 coin in the set? or for all three?

Hi patrickleibel, Each coin in the Aircraft of First World War subscription costs $99.95.

each coin of the set of three is 1oz? 99.99

Hi Harry, Yes, each coin in this subscription is 1oz of 99.99% fine silver.

I already have Coin 2: Sopwith Triplane. Can I just subscribe to Coin 1 and Coin 3?

Hi Blackbear - sorry, but this subscription includes all 3 coins.

The question was dated 8/30/2016 so it is too late now, but for next time: if you already bought a single coin from the RCM, and later want to get the subscription, you can take advantage of the RCM's 30 day return guarantee. Just call the normal RCM contact phone number to make the arrangements. You have to do that within 30 days of receiving the coin you want to return.

Aside form the free collector case, will I also receive the clamshell for each coin?

You will not receive the clamshell for each coin. The first and the third coin will be shipped as diecuts, i.e. encapsulated coins and certificates packaged in carton for shipping. The second coin will be shipped with the free collector case.

Yudi (Product Team)

The 1st and 2nd coins were already released. When I subscribe, will I pay for the 2 coins right away?

Hi John, Yes, since the first two coins have already been released, when you order this product on you will receive the first two coins and your credit card will be charged for the first two coins. If you would prefer to stagger the delivery and payments please call our customer service department (1-800-267-1871) and they'd be happy to set this up for you.

The second plane in the series appears to have two sets of wings and yet it is supposed to be a Tri-plane. Can you explain this please?

For the Sopwith Triplane coin, the plane shown in colour is indeed a triplane. You may not see the third set of wings clearly as they are shown head on.

Yudi (Product Team)

When will the third coin be issued

The last coin will be released September 2016.
