“That bear is killing all the animals and our people will starve. We must stop it,” the elders said. Three great hunters set out in pursuit of the great bear. They tracked it for many moons, across the earth and up into the sky.

The story above is the compelling First Nations legend that explains the origins of the Big Dipper, one of the most recognized formations in the night sky.

The seven stars that make up the Big Dipper are arguably one of the most recognized formations in the night sky. They are visible year-round from northern latitudes, and have inspired countless legends around the globe. Many First Nations legends describe the Big Dipper as a great bear who is hunted ceaselessly by three hunters. The first issue in this four-coin series shows the hunters answering the elders' call to stop the bear before it kills all the animals in the forest and brings starvation to the people.

A wonderful keepsake for star gazers and history buffs; anyone with a passion for Canada's rich ancestral past and its mystifying First Nations traditions and legends.

In the background, the Big Dipper glows in the dark; a foreboding sign of the eternal hunt that is to come.

Each coin has been different but with enough features shared with other coins to make the series a real series of coins. Not just the Native Canadian Indians pictured but the sky and the constellation in its different aspects as the seasons change. This demonstrates how nature remains the same but changes as we observe it over time, eventually returning to its beginning after it has reach its end. It is the supreme metaphor for existence: being born, growing thru life, then dying but only to rise again in a "reincarnation" of our first birth. What other coin or series has used existentialism as its thematic basis? These coins allow every one of us to become an astronomer while we view them, reproducing the awe inspiring view of the dark sky filled with the brilliant points of light that traveled for millions of years to reach us today. The coins existential theme, taken from the teaching wrought by starlight each night we see it, makes the coins uniquely a religious experience.

Mint hits another out-of-the-park.

The Canadian Mint never cease to amaze one. This series of coins, culminating with this stunning coin, is a must have series. I am so glad that I subscribed to it last summer. I have looked for every other month to the next release. I am sorry they made only four (total 28,0000) of these coins, meaning I wish they had made eight or twelve. Yes, one every month showing how the Big Dipper changes its orientation during the year would have been great. ONE mint thought it made hay with the domed HOF baseball coin, but domed coins have been made in Australia, inter alia, so the design was not ground breaking. And nothing on it was as creative as the glowing stars that make me want to live in my closet just to see them. This is a winner. Glad I won.

Great Mix of Innovation and Tradition

Love the concept of bringing native tribal culture to life and combining it with astronomical features. The design execution is fantastic and should facinate young and old alike. Wish a display box was availble to show these coins off.

Beautiful print !

I received this coin today and am very disappointed. It is another coin by the Mint that has a beautiful print on a flat surface ! No matter how colourful is the print, it just a print !!! The coin just lack the characteristic of a coin should have; that is the beauty of the sculptural details which shows the depth of the artwork. Another easy money making product from the Mint !!! I just have not commented on the previous ones. I also hate the enclosure casing, which cannot be opened without damaging the coin itself. I have been challenged by another collector from aboard on how can I proof what is actually inside when I try to trade coins with him. Is it that the Mint does not want us to know !!!

A nice addition with a cultural story

A nice designed silver coin that will make a great series. The native-American legend behind this new series adds to it's collectability. It tells a unique cultural story with superb artwork. The design artist,Cyril Assiniboine has shown again that he seems to always capture the feeling in the story/scene. The photoluminescent technology is a plus but, even without it, I would have purchased this coin regardless. Note: several minutes under direct sunlight seems to work best for the "glow-in-the-dark" feature. Again, I wish RCM would start putting these nicely designed coins on larger surfaces, like a 50mm carrying a 1.5 to 2 ounces weight.

By far the best of the year.

By far the most unique coins of the year. The combination of beautiful artwork, glow-in-the-dark on silver, story telling and packaging make it a one of a kind must have.

Love the unique design, that the stars glow, represents our First Nations and has a Indian tale to each coin Quality and good price for value of coin

Possibly the best coin I have seen.

I admit I am more of a bullion guy, but this coin seemed too good.. Great backtory to the art, and the coin has rich colour and great detail. The glow needs a good charge of light, but when the lights were turned out, its amazing. It really does look like the night sky. Probably one of the few instances where the photos (at least of the night scene) do not do justice to the real thing. I ordered two and was kind of stressed i wouldn't like them as I usually can't justify these prices when I know what the metal is worth, but absolutely no regrets about these or the entire subscription, assuming the same quality is there. Definitely justifying more than the metal content here. These are art.

glow in the dark feature

One reviewer was "disappointed" in the glow-in-the-dark feature of the coin. So was I until I exposed the coin on my window sill to direct sunlight for several hours. Then I opened it again inside my darkroom and the stars just popped off the coin. The sky, as another reviewer noted, has a background glow that is a natural aspect of some skies. I had been puzzled by the lack of brilliance of the stars until I had the idea to expose the coin to the strong rays of the sun during the afternoon. This immediately made the star design prominent when viewed in a very dark room. Try this and I'll bet your disappointment will turn to awe.
