This is the third coin in the Royal Canadian Mint's new series celebrating the Canadian coinage effigies of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

"I am sure that nowhere under the sun could one find a land more full of hope, of happiness and of fine, loyal, generous-hearted people.[…] They have placed in our hearts a love for their country and its people which will never grow cold and which will always draw us to their shores."

- Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) on Canada after her first Royal Tour in 1951

The rain that fell on the streets of London on Coronation Day (June 2, 1953) could not dampen the spirits of the millions of people who lined the procession route. In a horse-drawn carriage, Her Majesty proceeded to Westminster Abbey where she was crowned during an ancient and historic coronation service. Broadcast by television and shown in Canada ahead of any other country, those who watched could not possibly know that they were witnessing the beginning of a most remarkable reign that would extend well into the next millennium.

When the newly crowned monarch rose from her throne, Queen Elizabeth II was cheered by supporters around the world. In Canada, Her Majesty had occupied a warm place in the hearts of Canadians ever since her first tour here two years earlier. Canadians proudly welcomed their newly crowned Sovereign.

The third portrait of the Queen to appear on coinage was the one displayed on the obverse of this piece. Issued in 1990 and notable for the grand jewelled tiara and a beautiful string of pearls, this royal effigy was designed by Canadian artist Dora de Pedery-Hunt.

Since her coronation in 1953, Queen Elizabeth II has toured Canada more than twenty times. Her Majesty, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, has traversed every region of this massive land, from the Atlantic to the Pacific and from the Great lakes to the Arctic Circle. On each tour, the depth of their affection for and dedication to Canada and Canadians deepens. As Queen of Canada, Her Majesty's service of dedication over more than sixty years highlights her attachment to this country as she has often stated: "It is good to be home."

"10 DOLLARS". The obverse design features the third obverse of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to appear on Canadian coinage in 1990, when she was 64 years old. Did you know…
  • Canada's head of state, Her Majesty The Queen, is also head of state of fifteen other realms in the Commonwealth—a free association of fifty four like-minded countries that were once British colonies. In a constitutional monarchy such as ours, the Sovereign reigns but does not rule: power is invested in the Crown and is only "entrusted" to governments to use on behalf of the people.
  • In addition to being Sovereign of sixteen Commonwealth nations, Her Majesty serves as head of the Commonwealth—fifty four nations that comprise a quarter of the world's population, spans all continents with a focus on both discussion of common problems and the seeking of resolution.
  • In 2012, Her Majesty celebrated her Diamond Jubilee—the 60th anniversary of the Queen's accession to the Throne. Among realm Sovereigns, Queen Elizabeth II is only one of two monarchs to have attained a sixty year reign. Only her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, celebrated a Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a black beauty box.

Exceeded My Expectations

As a proud supporter of Canada's constitutional monarchy, as well as a prudent investor, I am drawn to those gold coins that I believe punch above the mark. This coin touched all points. A bit larger and heavier than I thought, I am most happy with my investment purchase. Excellent detailing of our Queen. This would make a nice special gift purchase for Christmastime or another event for those hard to buy for individuals.
