GORGEOUS! Includes selective platinum plating! Order today!

On June 30, 1987, Canadians were introduced to a new circulation coin. Quickly dubbed "the loonie", the distinctively bronze-coloured, 11-sided coin has become a daily part of Canadian life, even serving as a lucky talisman for our national hockey team.

Thirty years later, it's hard to imagine Canada's one-dollar coin without the solitary loon on its reverse. In truth, it wasn't the original design intended for the coin. Had the original dies not vanished in transit, our one-dollar coin would have featured the Voyageur image that first appeared on a dollar coin in 1935.

Perfect for someone who enjoys coin history! Don't be disappointed, hurry and order your 2-coin set today before they are all gone!

Special features:
  • CANADA'S LOONIE TURNS 30! Two pieces of Canadian coin history are yours to own in this special two-coin set that revisits the 1987 debut of Canada's $1 circulation coin.

The first coin features the design by Canadian artist Robert-Ralph Carmichael that has become synonymous with Canada's currency: the iconic side-profile portrait of a common loon on a still lake, where it floats past the Group of Seven-esque trees rising up on a small island behind it. The entire scene is representative of the lakes that dot the Canadian Shield across much of the nation, and includes the engraved words "CANADA" and "DOLLAR", along with the commemorative dates "1987-2017" to mark the 30th anniversary of Canada's $1 circulation coin.

The second coin represents the one-dollar circulation coin that never was. Much as it appeared on Canada's silver dollar between 1935 and 1986, the "Voyageur" design by sculptor and artist Emanuel Hahn is a nod to Canada's early history and the fur trade era. A canoe moves swiftly past the wind-swept pines that dot a semi-circular island. A voyageur paddles at the stern, while an Aboriginal man paddles at the bow; between them lies a bundle of wrapped furs, while stylized vertical rays above represent the Aurora borealis. The reverse also features the engraved words "CANADA" and "DOLLAR", along with the commemorative dates "1987-2017".

Both coins feature the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt on the obverse.

Your coins are is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded wooden box with a black beauty box.

Not satisfied at all

I received the coins and one of them was grossly Damaged. I went to return it to the boutique as I have not heard from my RC mint agent. I reviewed 5 of their coins and ALL of them were defective. This is not the first time I run into a defective gold coin and this is quite disappointing.

Disappointed man

I would have given 5 stars had they been the correct size

As an avid Loon and Silver Dollar collector love the limited mintage and the precious metal content but I would have preferred the coins in the correct size like the Silver pair.

The Past As Prologue

This set is truly unique. It includes the original "Voyageur" design used on Canada's first dollar coins, and its replacement, the Loonie, that was necessitated when the "Voyageur" dies disappeared. I have always thought of the Voyageur design as iconic: its simple, yet powerful design conveys all that is great about Canada - the Aurora, the vast northern wilderness and its rich Aboriginal and European settlement history. The RCM has done an exquisitely executed these coins: the selective platinum plating highlights features on both coins that add to the beauty of their design, especially on the Voyageur Dollar. As much as I like the Voyageur silver dollars, the way this coin has been struck takes it many levels beyond the original. The Loonie, too, is beautifully portrayed and together, the set is literally worth its weight in gold. I'm playing to buy the silver set, as well, but this set is truly unique from the moment the RCM's maple presentation case is open. What a beautiful way to remember these beautiful designs.
