Design:

Canadian artist Cathy Bursey-Sabourin has created an original woodcut design of iconic elements that define Canada’s Arctic Coast—a narwhal and snowy owl, with the Arctic’s deceptively barren landscape in the background. The narwhal’s tusk pierces the air as it comes to the surface to breathe, while the snowy owl flies overhead, hunting for ptarmigan or seabirds. The narwhal’s fin and the owl’s wings rise upwards, towards the deceptively barren landscape that rises behind them, and the design flows upward, as if leading the viewer towards the North.

Did you know…
  • The narwhal is often called the “Unicorn of the Sea” because of its long tusk that can measure 3 m. Once believed to be a tool for breaking holes in ice, scientists are now hypothesizing it’s a sensory organ that detects subtle changes in temperature, salinity or pressure—a must-have for a whale that dives 1,500 m for 30 minutes!
  • The snowy owl is one of North America’s heaviest and most distinctive owls. It’s built for the Arctic and can easily endure temperatures of -50ºC due to its dense layer of down and thick feather overlay. Lemmings are its primary prey, but the snowy owl will feast on ptarmigan and seabirds, and is fast enough to snag a duck in flight!
  • Measuring a coastline is not as simple as it might appear. The “coastline paradox” explains how smaller units of measurement can penetrate all the tiny curves and irregularities to result in a longer length. Example: a 2,800 km coastline measured in units of 100 km becomes 3,400 km when measured in units of 50 km.
  • Woodcut is the earliest known printmaking method, and was used most commonly to stamp patterns onto textiles before being used to print images onto paper. Characterized by uneven image lines that are the result of carving out the areas of wood that will not be printed, the woodcut technique was widely used in Western art from the very early 15th to the early 17th centuries, with a later revival in popularity in the late 19th century.
