The Flying Loon dollar flies once more—this time, as a reverse gold-plated 5 oz. coin that is at least twice the size of the original. In 1997, Canada's beloved loonie celebrated its 10th anniversary. To mark the occasion, wildlife artist Jean-Luc Grondin created an alternate version of the coin's iconic reverse by depicting the loon splashing across the lake during take-off. The anniversary-themed image graced the reverse of the 1997 Proof Dollar, as well as a 1-dollar piece that was exclusive to the Oh Canada and 1997 Specimen sets. Grondin re-visited Canada's most famous loon in his design for the 2002 15th Anniversary of the Loon Dollar, as well as the 2006 and 2008 Lucky Loonie coins.

STUNNING! A gorgeous addition for any collector interested in Canadian minting history! Order today!

Special features:
  • SIGHT UNSEEN SINCE 1997 – Your coin's reverse design has not appeared on any other coin since 1997, when it was featured on the 1997 Proof Dollar and the specimen dollar exclusive to the “Oh Canada” and 1997 Specimen sets.
  • SILVER AND GOLD, TOGETHER ON ONE COIN – New for 2019, reverse gold plating adds a warm-toned gleam that creates a beautiful contrast next to the silver shine of the engraved relief!

  • 5 OUNCES PURE SILVER – Your coin is crafted from five ounces 99.99% pure silver!
  • LARGE DIAMETER –Your 5-cent coin has a diameter of 65.25 mm and a nominal metal weight of 157.6 grams! The ideal diameter and weight for such a beautiful design!
  • SERIALIZED CERTIFICATE –Your coin includes a serialized certificate!

The reverse features a reproduction of the design that graced the proof and specimen dollar coins issued in 1997. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Canada's 1-dollar circulation piece, Canadian artist Jean-Luc Grondin offered his own take on the iconic reverse by depicting the loon taking flight. Reverse gold plating fills the field while the coin's silver surface draws the eye to the engraved relief, which includes the words “CANADA” and “DOLLAR”, and the date “2019”. The reverse gold-plated obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with graphic beauty box.

Slight damage on face and rim

Slight damage/imperfections noted. Not the quality I have come to expect from RCM

All Rim

If it wasn't for the to large amount of RIM showing on the coin I would have purchased it. Very poorly done and doesn't reflect the original silver coin of 1997 Flying Loon. How can this over site occur.
