Your coin brings together symbolic elements that reflect how the Canadian flag is perceived both at home and abroad. Occupying much of the image's field, the famous red flag—its white centre square bearing the stylized red maple leaf—billows softly in the wind at full-mast atop a flagpole. Beneath it, a backpacker stands turned to the right and gazes at the horizon beyond a landscape that is a cross-section of Canada. This traveler's journey highlights the freedom and opportunities offered by Canada to explore and grow, whether at home or abroad. And while the addition of a small Canadian flag on the backpack is a common practice for Canadian travelers, it also speaks to the respect and recognition this national symbol receives throughout the world. The flag's 50th anniversary is highlighted with a symbolic ring of 50 maple leafs.

Since it was first raised in 1965, the National Flag of Canada has come to symbolize many of the values and opportunities that have defined Canada and its people.

Did you know?
•     The adoption of a national flag was proposed as far back as the late nineteenth century, but to no avail – that is, until the idea was raised again in 1964 by Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson.
•     After much divisive debate, the National Flag of Canada was approved by Parliament in 1964. At the stroke of noon on February 15, 1965, the Canadian Red Ensign (Canada's previous flag) was lowered on Parliament Hill and replaced by the National Flag of Canada!
•     The official way to describe the flag is by explaining it as a red flag with a white square in its centre, which is adorned with a red maple leaf.
•     The design is symmetrical—if you fold the flag from one red edge to the other, both halves should be the same!
•     The maple leaf has long been used as a symbol for this country; meanwhile, red and white were featured prominently in the Canadian coat of arms, as proclaimed by King George V in 1921.Official flag etiquette requires that the National Flag of Canada never touch the ground!

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with black beauty box.

Generally attractive.

Generally satisfactory as a gift for my adult children. i was disappointed not to receive the holiday gift bonus which you were strongly advertising for purchases over $200

Very poorly done !!

This coin was very disappointing. The maple leaf should be red. We shouldn't have to search to find the maple leaf, the design shows a flag that could be from any country. How does this commemorate " 50th anniversary of the Canadian Flag " ??????? Very disappointing. Do not buy. This is my first post concerning a coin with deceiving marketing.

50 Anniversary coin disappoints

As far a designs go this is the most disappointing coin I've purchased from the RCM. It was supposed to be a commemorative of the 50th Anniversary of the Canadian Maple Leaf Flg. Unfortunately you can search for the leaf and never see it in all the heavy furling of the waving flag. The Maple Leaf is practically absent. It really is a mess. Only recommended for supporters of the Red Ensign.

i buy this every year

am a Master club member-just barely by amount spent each year. I think for the average coin collector, it would be beneficial to the Mint, to start monthly credit card payments. The collector could order his/her coins early in the year and pay for them monthly on their credit card

Beautiful coin, like it very much!

Very nice design. Well liked for celebrating our Canadian flag.

Great Value !

I buy an array of coins for an investment, and I only buy coins that touch my soul with their beauty. I also have to stay within a targeted budget I have made for the purchase of coins. The Coins of the Royal Canadian Mint are a great dollar value and very artistic. I enjoy the subscription coins, and the BU coins offered from the Royal mint. I wish I could personally Thank each of the designers who have created these wonderful works of art. I truly feel each coin is a work of art.

Up to the mint's remarkably superb calibre

As an collector of specific Canadian coins I find that this particular coin has value for the owner that goes well beyond the price one would have paid for it.
